Seminary Girls To Take On Team USA
For one day next month, it’s Wyoming Seminary’s girls versus the rest of the country. The Blue Knights’ girls wrestling team, in its second year as a program, will take part in a Wyoming Seminary vs. USA All-Star Dual during the weekend of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Pittsburgh, TeamUSA.org announced Tuesday. The matchup between some of the nation’s best high school wrestlers is slated to begin at 4:15 p.m. on March 23 in Hall A of the David L. Lawrence Conventio Center, where the NCAA Fan Festival will be hosted. There will be no admission fee for the freestyle dual meet, according to USA Wrestling’s news release. “The amount of opportunities for girls are increasing exponentially at all levels — we believe it is important to keep a focus on Freestyle for young women,” Sem coach Erin Vandiver said in the reelease. “The dual will feature competitive match ups between girls from coast to coast with many USA World/National Team members and All Americans represented.” Seminary and USA’s rosters are expected to be filled with accomplished wrestlers from a number of states. National No. 1s Mia Palumbo (106) and Alexys Zepeda (122) highlight the tentative USA lineup. Sem has a pair of wrestlers ranked No. 2 in the country, including Benton native and 2018 Junior Nationals champion Vayle Baker. She’s second at 117, while teammate Caitlyn Walker is No. 2 at 106, the release noted. They’re just part of a Blue Knights team that is entirely ranked in the country’s top 20 in their weight classes.
