ASU softball knocks off Lipscomb to open Tuscaloosa Regional

May 18, 2019 GMT

A solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning from Jade Gortarez broke a 3-3 tie and Arizona State held on to defeat Lipscomb 4-3 in a back-and-forth opening game of the Tuscaloosa Regional on Friday.

The game was scoreless through the first three innings before a two-run homer from Jenna Pealor gave the Bisons the lead in the top of the fourth.

The next half-inning, Gortarez got the Sun Devils on the board with a single to drive in Kindra Hackbarth, who doubled earlier in the frame.

Back-to-back home runs from Yanira Acuna and Kiara Kennedy gave ASU a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Lipscomb tied the game the very next inning with a solo home run from Jordan Fortel before Gortarez delivered the game’s deciding blow in the bottom of the inning.

Samantha Mejia picked the win in relief for the Sun Devils, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings to finish the game.

The Sun Devils advance to the winners’ bracket and will face regional host Alabama today at 11 a.m.

The winner of that game will need only one more win to clinch the regional and will play again on Sunday, while the loser will await the winner of the matchup between Lipscomb and Alabama State in the losers’ bracket.

The game between Harvard and No. 6 Arizona in the Tuscon Regional finished after deadline.

In the first game of the regional, No. 23 Auburn knocked off Colorado State 10-5.

The Tigers advance to the winners’ bracket and will face the winner of the Harvard-Arizona matchup today at 3 p.m.

Colorado State will take on the loser of Friday night’s late game in a losers’ bracket matchup at 5:30 p.m.
