Off the rails

■Ryan McBroom, one of the RailRiders’ top hitters this season, was a late scratch to the lineup before the game with a bit of tightness in the upper-chest/shoulder area that popped up after he did his early throwing and hitting. By gametime, he was actually feeling better.

“Matter of fact, right before the game he said, ‘I’m good.’ He said, ‘I can play,’” RaillRiders manager Jay Bell said.

■ To make room for RHP Jake Barrett, the RailRiders sent OF Zack Zehner to Double-A on Saturday. Zehner had been with the RailRiders all season and was batting .239 with a .330 on-base percentage and a .295 slugging percentage. “Very difficult and he handled it fine,” Bell said. “It’s disappointing any time you get sent to a lower level, for any player. Big leagues to Triple-A, Triple-A to Double-A, Double-A to High-A or whatever. And yet that’s part of the business side of this game. “We’ve got some guys here with some big league experience that need to play, that need to get their swings right and their glovework right, all that kind of stuff, so that if there is a need at the big league level, we can utilize those players. They’ve been there, they’ve done it and if the Yankees win a World Series, then we all benefit. As tough as that is for players to hear, they understand it, but it’s still very difficult.”

■ RHP Raynel Espinal will remain a starting pitcher for the foreseeable future. “He’s in the rotation right now until something else happens, if something else happens,” Bell said. “He’s stretched out. He’s done a good job. He’s capable of extending. He’s done a great job getting stretched out.” Espinal has started three of his eight games this season. Last year, he appeared in 41 games and made three starts.
