Bridgeport FD remembers fallen firefighters
BRIDGEPORT — The city’s fire department remembered two fallen firefighters this week.
On Nov. 9, firefighters remembered Bridgeport Firefighter Nicholas T. Auriemma, who died in the line of duty 40 years prior on Nov. 9, 1978.
Two days later, the department remembered Bridgeport Fire Lt. William M. Hathaway, 57, of Loftus Circle in Bridgeport, died on Nov. 11, 1986, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center.
Reports from the Bridgeport Telegram at the time said Hathaway, a 22-year veteran of the fire department, died after suffering a heart attack while he was helping resuscitate a 73-year-old North End woman.
Paramedics found Hathaway at the scene unconscious, not breathing and with no pulse. The paramedics revived him and took him to St. Vincent’s. He was awake and conscious when he arrived, but then apparently went into cardiac arrest a second time and was unable to be resuscitated.
