BRIDGEPORT - A Maplewood Avenue deli is facing a $570 civil penalty from the federal Food and Drug Administration after inspectors found two violations of tobacco sale law in less than a year, reports said.

The Sunshine Kitchen and Deil located at 999 Maplewood Ave. first drew the attention of authorities after an FDA inspector found evidence that the store was selling single cigarettes in March 2018, reports said.

Documents related to the complaint indicated that during the inspection which took place on March 21, 2018, the inspector found open packages of Newport and Marlborough cigarettes.

The owner admitted that the store sells individual cigarettes for 50 cents each, the complaint said. The owner was sent a warning letter in May 2018 explaining that if another violation occurred, the store could face a civil penalty or other regulatory action.

During a second inspection in January, the inspector witnessed a minor buy a package of Garcia y Vega cigars without the clerk asking for photo identification, documents said.

Due to the two violations, the FDA is seeking a $570 civil penalty from the store. The owner has 30 days to request a hearing on the penalty.
