‘Contradiction of our country’s free speech’
The new “normal” in politics is not just polarizing, it’s now a factor of how far left or right you can be while spewing commentary that’s especially insulting, demeaning and dismissive. While I’m not exactly sure how we got here as a country, it unfortunately has become fair-play with anyone who doesn’t agree with us; and the politics in Greenwich don’t not seem to be immune to the country’s divisive new normal.
America’s Voice has been mentioned, spurned and praised in the back and forth commentary between extremes in Greenwich regarding a Town Hall meeting that we agreed to cover and sponsor as a news network.
Once we learned that there are those in Greenwich that oppose the exchange of ideas, perspectives and proposed solutions, we thought it was important to clarify our position as a news platform.
America’s Voice was developed from the reality that media conglomerates, pundits and politicians seem to be more interested in finding a way to shame you for your opinions and beliefs instead of informing you with a wide range of perspectives.
Silencing an opposing view stands in contradiction of our country’s free speech framework. By choosing to only speak to those that agree with you, you’re making a conscious decision to suppress the Democratic process.
We believe that giving opposing viewpoints an opportunity to be heard is necessary for informed-citizenship and fosters a more informed voter. It requires us to consider the opinions of those that seemingly disagree with us and interact with those that may stand in polar opposition to what we stand for.
Free speech, even at its most basic, requires a difficult and tempered approach to true patriotism. But when its executed successfully, it has a high probability to challenge your personal sense of morality and justice.
We don’t believe that character assassinations promote free speech or the open exchange of ideas.
Raising the level of debate is part of why America’s Voice exists. We’re sponsoring this town hall, and will sponsor others across the country, because we believe it strengthens communities and is a unique forum for the public to hear and interact with a wide range of perspectives, ask questions, get answers and make informed decisions for themselves.
