Man robbed at knifepoint in downtown Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A registered sex offender is accused of robbing a 27-year-old man at knifepoint in downtown Cleveland, police said.

Marcus Drake, 35, is charged with aggravated robbery. He is in the Cuyahoga County Jail on $50,000 bond after his first court appearance on Thursday.

Drake denied robbing the man, but said he confronted him after he saw the 27-year-old man talking to the mother of his children, according to police reports.

The incident happened about 10 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Superior Avenue and East 23rd Street.

Drake said he gave a ride to a man he didn’t know from the city’s West Side. When he parked his car, Drake immediately walked up to the man’s car door, reached into the window and said: “Give me everything. Give me what you got,” police reports say.

Drake tried to grab the man’s keys but the man fended him off, according to police. The passenger in the car, who has not yet been identified by police, kept telling him to give his keys to Drake, police reports say.

Drake put a knife to the man’s throat and demanded the  keys, police said. The man crawled out of the passenger side of the car and both Drake and the passenger threatened to attack the man if he ran, police reports say.

Two other men walked from behind a building and rummaged through the 27-year-old man’s car. Drake walked up to him, ordered the man to his knees and put a knife to his throat, police reports say.

Drake stole the man’s Social Security card out of his wallet and took off on a bicycle, police reports say.

The group going through the man’s car slashed his seats and carved “E 22 Payne” on the roof of the car.

An RTA police officer working for the Downtown Alliance, a group that walks the streets of downtown Cleveland and helps passers-by with any questions they might have about the downtown area, saw the robbery and the rest of the group going through his car.

The RTA officer stopped and the man pointed out Drake as the man who robbed him. The RTA officer stopped Drake and held him until Cleveland police arrived, police reports say.

The man had two small cuts where Drake held the knife to his throat, police reports say.

Drake has been convicted in three other robbery or theft cases since 2007.

He was sentenced in August 2017 to time served in the county jail after pleading guilty to aggravated theft and assault for attacking a woman stealing cash from her on East 71st and Superior Avenue.

He was sentenced to eight years in prison in 2009 after he followed a woman from a store at the same intersection, grabbed her from behind in a vacant field and raped her.

A judge designated Drake a Tier III sex offender, meaning he has to register his address with the county sheriff every 90 days for the rest of his life.

In 2007, he wore a mask and hat and robbed a woman at on St. Clair Avenue and East 18th Street in downtown Cleveland. He was sentenced to one year on probation in that case.
