WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A Florida woman was sentenced Monday to 40 years in prison for a fatal shooting at a mobile home park.

Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Joseph Marx sentenced Malyra Marie Perez, 26, after she pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and several other charges, including burglary and aggravated assault, the Palm Beach Post reported. She had been facing a first-degree murder charge, which would have meant a mandatory life sentence if convicted.

Palm Beach County deputies responded to the Briarwood Mobile Home Park near Greenacres in December 2016 and found Jose Armando Lopez, 28, dead from a gunshot wound. A relative told investigators that he had been sitting with Lopez on a porch when a woman approached them and shot Lopez.

A woman claiming to be Lopez’s girlfriend told deputies that he had been kidnapped and beaten a week before the shooting. Several people had told Lopez not to sell drugs in the area anymore.

Witnesses, surveillance video from area businesses and location data from Perez’s phone connected her to the crime scene, deputies said. Detectives found Lopez’s blood in a rental car that Perez had been using, as well as a gun she was carrying when she was arrested several days after the shooting.
