Scott Dixon adds 5th IndyCar championship to resume

The Latest: Scott Dixon seals 5th IndyCar championship
SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — The Latest on the IndyCar season finale Sunday at Sonoma Raceway (all times local):
Scott Dixon has won his fifth IndyCar championship with a second-place finish at Sonoma Raceway.
Ryan Hunter-Reay won the race from the pole.
Dixon needed only a steady race to hold off challenger Alexander Rossi in the championship fight. Rossi broke his front wing on the opening lap when he ran into teammate Marco Andretti and it effectively ended his chances.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Scott Dixon didn't spend much time sharing the spot with Michael Andretti for the third-most wins in Indy-car history.
A week after a matching victory, Dixon led the last 119 laps in the IndyCar Series race at Texas on Saturday night to move ahead of Andretti with career win No. 43.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — The Latest on IndyCar race at Texas Motor Speedway (all times local):
Scott Dixon won his second consecutive IndyCar Series race to quickly break a tie for the third-most career wins in Indy-car history.
Dixon led 119 of 248 laps at Texas on Saturday night for his 43rd career victory. A week ago at Detroit, he won to match Michael Andretti's 42 wins. Dixon trails only A.J. Foyt's 67 wins and Mario Andretti's 52.
Scott Dixon is looking for just a bit more consistency from start to finish on race weekends, even if he hasn't placed out of the top five in more than a month.
Imagine what Dixon could accomplish the rest of this IndyCar season once he really feels like he's in a groove behind the wheel of the No. 9 Honda.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Tony Kanaan found himself in a familiar place atop the speed chart Friday at the final practice for the Indianapolis 500, while Honda appeared to find a little more speed on Carb Day.
Kanaan paced the field with a lap of 227.791 mph, underscoring the might that Chevrolet has shown all month. But he was followed by three Honda-powered cars driven by Scott Dixon, Marco Andretti and Sebastien Bourdais, a sign of just how wide open Sunday's race figures to be.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — For all the success Tony Kanaan has had inside an Indy car, from winning the series title to his long-sought Indianapolis 500 triumph, you'd think he would have landed with one team for good.
Instead, one of the sport's most popular drivers has always been searching for stability.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A.J. Foyt still cuts an imposing figure around Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Everyone knows of him, everyone knows his record and it seems everyone here has actually met one of the greatest drivers ever. He has seen and done virtually everything around this 2.5-mile oval, even getting retirement advice from inaugural Indianapolis 500 winner Ray Harroun three decades before he actually put it to use.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The throwback month is in full swing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Danica Patrick started tuning up for her final race on the historic 2.5-mile oval more than a week ago. Helio Castroneves has been peppered with questions about becoming the fourth four-time winner of the Indianapolis 500.
The seemingly indestructible A.J. Foyt came back less than two months after surviving a second bout with killer bees. Even real, live bumping should be on the qualifying weekend docket.
Detroit — IndyCar driver Tony Kanaan has cherished memories from races at Belle Isle, a reason he was in town Tuesday afternoon to promote the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix doubleheader, which will be held on June 1-3.
Kanaan, the 2013 Indianapolis 500 winner, is now competing for the legendary A.J. Foyt. Kanaan won his first race in America on Belle Isle in the Indy Lights series back in 1996, then once again in 1997 on the way to earning the series championship.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves watched from afar as NASCAR stars Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart retired and Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced that he will step away after the season.
Castroneves is far from jealous. But he is definitely curious.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Helio Castroneves has spent the past six years chasing history at the Indianapolis 500, trying in vain to join A.J. Foyt, Rick Mears and Al Unser Sr. in an exclusive club of four-time winners.
He didn't anticipate making a different kind of history last weekend.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Rookie Zach Veach crashed hard Friday on the final day of practice before qualifying this weekend for the Indianapolis 500.

He stayed in the car momentarily before climbing out under his own power. The 22-year-old American was later checked, cleared and released to drive.
Veach happy to be thrown into IndyCar in Alabama
Zach Veach had called Ed Carpenter Racing simply to check in on a fellow injured driver.
