Rangers don’t tender contracts to Hanser Alberto, 3 pitchers
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers have decided not to tender contracts to infielder Hanser Alberto and three right-handed pitchers.
The trio of pitchers — Chi Chi Gonzalez, A.J. Griffin and Nick Martinez — also became free agents after the moves before Friday night's non-tender deadline.
Texas has two unfilled spots in its starting rotation. General manager Jon Daniels said the team isn't ruling out bringing back Griffin or Martinez but is keeping open its options.
Choo homers but Rangers do little else in 8-3 loss to A’s
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A.J. Griffin's day began with a disputed balk call that was eventually waved off. Turned out, that was about the only thing that went in his favor.
The right-hander gave up consecutive home runs to his former team in the second inning and retired only 10 batters as the Oakland Athletics beat Griffin and the Texas Rangers 8-3 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.
Rangers hit 3 homers off Verlander in 10-4 win over Tigers
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Joey Gallo and Mike Napoli hit back-to-back homers and the Texas Rangers beat the Detroit Tigers 10-4 on Tuesday night to end Justin Verlander's three-game winning streak.
The Rangers had just gone ahead 2-1 on Nomar Mazara's RBI single in the fourth inning when Gallo hit his 34th homer, a towering drive that landed in the second deck of seats in right-center above the Texas bullpen and was estimated at 459 feet.
NEW YORK (AP) — Chris Flexen had a night of firsts in his Citi Field debut.
The 23-year-old right-hander got his first big league win and hit, and the New York Mets took an early four-run lead against emergency starter A.J. Griffin in a 5-4 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night that stopped a four-game losing streak.
"It's exciting," Flexen said. "The first win's always the toughest, especially with the first two outings being a little rough."
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Joey Gallo has made plenty of progress at the plate this season for the Texas Rangers.
Those home runs just keep going and going, too.
Gallo's latest massive homer was a three-run shot in the fourth inning Thursday night that spurred the Rangers to a 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins, making A.J. Griffin a winner in his first start in more than two months.
Gallo has 29 home runs this year, with four long balls in the last three games.
A look at what's happening all around the majors today:
The Los Angeles Dodgers try for their 11th straight win, which would match the team's best string since 2006. Rich Hill pitches for the NL West leaders when the Los Angeles Angels visit Dodger Stadium — Angels starter Ricky Nolasco has lost seven decisions in a row.
NEW YORK (AP) — A hotel door has jammed up Martin Perez and the Texas Rangers.
In the latest setback for a depleted Rangers rotation, Perez was placed on the 10-day disabled list Saturday after injuring the thumb on his non-pitching hand in an accident at the team hotel.
TORONTO (AP) — Devon Travis celebrated the return of Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki with one big swing for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Travis hit his second career grand slam, and Toronto beat the Texas Rangers 7-6 on Friday night for its fourth consecutive victory.
Justin Smoak and Kendrys Morales also connected, and Aaron Loup (2-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win.
DETROIT (AP) — Alex Avila, Miguel Cabrera and J.D. Martinez hit consecutive home runs in the first inning as the Detroit Tigers beat Texas 9-3 on Saturday night, ending the Rangers' 10-game winning streak.
Nicholas Castellanos added a three-run homer in the third and Justin Verlander (4-3) pitched seven solid innings for the Tigers.
The Rangers were on their longest winning streak since a 12-game run in 2011, but it ended emphatically against Detroit.
DETROIT (AP) — The way Justin Verlander saw it, Texas may have been due for a loss.
With three straight homers in the first inning, Verlander's Detroit Tigers set about ending the Rangers' 10-game winning streak.

Dyson was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list before Friday night's series opener against the Los Angeles Angels.
Rangers’ Griffin to miss at least 1 start due to gout
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers right-hander A.J. Griffin will miss at least one start because of gout in his left ankle.
Griffin was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday with inflammation related to gout, forcing him out of his start Saturday against Kansas City. The Rangers did not immediately announce a corresponding roster move or another starter.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Unlike the first time he faced the Athletics this season, Texas right-hander A.J. Griffin had no problem keeping his emotions under control while pitching against his former club.
Having a strong curveball to counter an 87 mph fastball definitely helped, too.
Griffin pitched six scoreless innings in his return to the Oakland Coliseum, Nomar Mazara had two hits and three RBIS, and the Texas Rangers beat the Athletics 7-0 on Monday night.
Rangers hit 3 HRs, prevent Angels comeback in 8-3 win
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Mike Trout stepped to the plate against young Rangers reliever Jose Leclerc with a runner on second base and the entire Angel Stadium crowd anticipating another exhilarating comeback.
Three pitches later, Trout was back in the dugout. One pitch after that, Albert Pujols joined him.
The Rangers' bullpen had no interest in another night of drama.
Projected record: 84-78Projected run differential: +24The Rangers have greatly outperformed their Pythagorean record the past two seasons, and the projection systems used in this exercise expect some regression in that regard for 2017. Having Jonathan Lucroy for a full season will help, and Carlos Gomez is projected to be about league-average after rediscovering his form in Texas. The caliber of the Rangers' rotation drops off considerably once you get past Yu Darvish and Cole Hamels. Martin Perez, Andre Cashner, Tyson Ross and A.J. Griffin are all far from being called reliable, though each has a certain level of upside. A bullpen led by Sam Dyson, Matt Bush and Jeremy Jeffress should be effective, as Texas has several reliable arms at its disposal.
Rangers avoid arbitration with all 7, topped by closer Dyson
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers avoided salary arbitration with all seven of their eligible players Friday, topped by closer Sam Dyson getting a $3 million raise after making just over the major league minimum last season.
Dyson agreed to a $3.52 million contract after taking over as closer for the AL West champions about a month into the season and finishing third in the AL with 38 saves. The right-hander made $525,270 last season.
Rangers closer to AL West after testy 5-4 win over Angels
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Nick Martinez stuck his glove blindly behind his back and stabbed a hard liner out of the air, part of a spectacular double play in a big relief appearance for the Texas Rangers as they got closer to another AL West title.
"I don't know how he caught it," manager Jeff Banister said after the Rangers' 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night cut their magic number to two.
Moreland, Griffin lead Rangers to 7-0 win over Indians
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Early run support went a long way to helping Texas Rangers right-hander A.J. Griffin produce his best outing of the season and outpitch the best road pitcher in the major leagues this season.
Mitch Moreland's grand slam capped a bizarre, five-run first inning and Griffin pitched six strong innings as the Rangers beat the Cleveland Indians 7-0 Saturday night.
