South Dakota lawmakers seek to reduce absentee voting window

Election regulators said Thursday that early voting surpassed 322,000 ballots the previous day.
That exceeds early in-person and absentee voting of nearly 298,000 in 2010 — the last time there was an open seat for governor. In 2014, about 255,000 people voted early or by absentee ballot.

Virginians face 2 absentee voting deadlines this week
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Two deadlines are coming up this week for Virginia voters who want to cast an absentee ballot for the November election.
The Department of Elections says voters have until Saturday to cast an absentee ballot in person at their local voter registration office.
Qualifying reasons to vote absentee include pregnancy, a religious obligation or personal business or vacation outside where you live on Election Day.
Michigan absentee ballot requests near presidential levels
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The number of absentee ballots cast ahead of Michigan's election is well above 2014 levels, and the number requested is almost keeping pace with how many were sent in the 2016 presidential race.
The figures released by the state Friday suggest there will be higher-than-normal turnout for the Nov. 6 midterm election.
So far, nearly 1.1 million absentee ballots have been sent, and roughly 588,000 have been returned 11 days before the election.
Maine Dems hold absentee ballot advantage as election looms
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Democrats are outpacing Republicans when it comes to absentee voting in Maine.
All told, nearly 100,000 absentee ballots had been requested as of this week. An analysis by The Associated Press indicates Democrats accounted for 45 percent of requests, Republicans 27 percent and unenrolled voters 25 percent.
Those track roughly with returned ballots with less than two weeks to Election Day: 19,470 for Democrats, 12,965 for Republicans and 10,708 for unenrolled voters.
