Nosek helps Golden Knights beat Islanders 3-2
NEW YORK (AP) — Tomas Nosek scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period and the surging Vegas Golden Knights beat the New York Islanders 3-2 on Wednesday night.
Jonathan Marchessault and William Karlsson also scored to help the Golden Knights win for the 10th time in 13 games. Marc-Andre Fleury, making his 11th straight start, stopped 23 shots to take over the NHL victory lead with 18.
Greiss makes 26 saves, Islanders defeat Hurricanes 4-1
NEW YORK (AP) — Thomas Greiss didn't face a ton of shots against Carolina on Saturday. When he was tested, he came away with the big saves.
Greiss made 26 saves, Valtteri Filppula, Anthony Beauvillier, Josh Bailey and Adam Pelech scored and the Islanders beat the Hurricanes 4-1.
Greiss was starting in his second game in as many nights after leading the Islanders to a 4-3 overtime win over the New Jersey Devils on Friday.
Barzal, Pelech lead Islanders to 4-1 win over Penguins
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Islanders had fun again Tuesday night. Getting just their second win in the last month and beating the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions will do that.
Mathew Barzal and Adam Pelech scored in the first period and the Islanders went on to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1. Anders Lee had a goal in the third period and Jordan Eberle added an empty-netter to help New York improve to 2-7-4 since Feb. 19.
Matthews ties it, leaves with injury; Leafs top Isles in SO
TORONTO (AP) — Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock acknowledged his team didn't play very well Thursday night, and his players know things could become much more difficult if they have to deal with another injury absence for Auston Matthews.
Tavares’ tiebreaker finishes hat trick, Isles top Coyotes
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Islanders invariably look to their captain John Tavares for a boost and he delivered with a timely hat trick against the struggling Arizona Coyotes.
Tavares completed his three-goal night with a tiebreaking score in the third period, lifting the Islanders over the winless Arizona Coyotes 5-3 on Tuesday night.
The Islanders won their third straight and improved to 5-3-1. Jaroslav Halak made 32 saves for New York.
With two games left in their regular season, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers got reinforcements from the eliminated New York Islanders on Monday.
The parent club sent right winger Josh Ho-Sang, defenseman Adam Pelech and centerman Connor Jones back to Bridgeport at the end of the NHL’s regular season, which wraps a week before the AHL’s.
NEW YORK (AP) — The well-rested and high-scoring Winnipeg Jets took advantage of a New York Islanders team that looked tired Thursday night.
Bryan Little scored twice, Connor Hellebuyck made 27 saves and the Jets beat the Islanders 4-2 to snap a four-game skid.
Mathieu Perreault and Adam Lowry also scored for the Jets, who had their game Tuesday in Newark, New Jersey, against the Devils postponed because of a snowstorm.
TOEWS STARS — Bridgeport Sound Tigers rookie defenseman Devon Toews was chosen to represent the team at the AHL All-Star Classic, the league announced Thursday. Toews has 22 points, second on the team and good for the top 10 among both defensemen and rookies.
BRIDGEPORT — In just a short conversation Tuesday morning, it felt as if Patrick Cullity used the word “role” in every other sentence.
Call him a role player for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers if you want, but it’s a good role.
“His role with us is just a defensive defenseman,” coach Brent Thompson said. “Make a simple outlet pass and be a great penalty killer. He is that. He does a lot of little things that a lot of people don’t want to do.
Leddy ends 14-round shootout, Islanders beat Ducks
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Goaltender Thomas Greiss has been trying to keep the same approach while the New York Islanders have struggled this season.
He had to stick with it a little longer Tuesday night.
Nick Leddy scored the winner in a marathon 14-round shootout, lifting the Islanders over the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 on Tuesday night.
BRIDGEPORT — In 24 hours this weekend, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers lost two defensemen, Kyle Burroughs to injury and Adam Pelech to their parent club, the New York Islanders.
Bridgeport had six defensemen, the usual minimum, on the ice for Monday’s practice at Webster Bank Arena. It will surely bring at least one or two in by its next game, Friday at Syracuse.
But the six that remained have the confidence of their coach.
NOT QUITE DODGED: Bridgeport Sound Tigers coach Brent Thompson said defenseman Adam Pelech was sore Tuesday after blocking a shot late in Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Springfield.
Pelech and three forwards — Bracken Kearns, Ross Johnston and Travis St. Denis — got what Thompson termed maintenance days as the Sound Tigers practiced at the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport.
“It’s precautionary,” Thompson said. “We want to make sure we’re ready for the weekend.”
Islanders’ Bridgeport visit features a competition for spots on defense
BRIDGEPORT — There’s a chance the free-agent signing with the biggest impact on the Bridgeport Sound Tigers this year never plays a game for them.
The New York Islanders signed Dennis Seidenberg this week, giving them a sixth experienced NHL defenseman. His arrival probably pushes at least one more young defenseman to the Sound Tigers.
