CLEVELAND (AP) — The sweet-swinging Cleveland Indians are taking their show on the road after one successful homestand.
Edwin Encarnacion hit an eighth-inning grand slam, helping the Indians rout the Detroit Tigers 12-2 on Sunday for their season-high seventh straight win.
Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez and Jason Kipnis also connected for Cleveland, which outscored Detroit 26-3 in the three-game sweep. Ramirez finished with three hits, extending his streak of reaching base to 31 consecutive games.
Plutko, Miller pitch Indians past Cubs 1-0
CHICAGO (AP) — Adam Plutko was nervous. Not about making his second major league start, really. It was all about stepping to the plate.
Once that was over, everything fell into place.
Plutko carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Andrew Miller provided stellar relief work, helping the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago Cubs 1-0 on Wednesday night.
HOUSTON (AP) — Justin Verlander got some run support for the first time in nearly a month and led the Houston Astros over the San Francisco Giants 4-1 on Wednesday.
Verlander (6-2) struck out nine and walked one in six innings, allowing one run and three hits as his major league-leading ERA rose slightly to 1.08. He had given up just three runs over 29 innings during his previous four starts, but the Astros had scored just three runs in that span, getting shut out twice.
CHICAGO (AP) — Struggling right-hander Josh Tomlin is out of the Cleveland Indians' rotation.
Tomlin says he "definitely wasn't surprised" by the move to the bullpen. He was 0-4 with a 7.84 ERA through six starts and seven appearances prior to Tuesday's game against the Chicago Cubs.
NEW YORK (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have designated infielder Gio Urshela and left-hander Jeff Beliveau for assignment and put righty reliever Alexi Ogando on the major league roster.
The Indians made the moves before playing Friday night at Yankee Stadium. They also sent right-hander Adam Plutko back to Triple-A Columbus, a day after he was added as the 26th man for a doubleheader and earned his first big league win.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Indians manager Terry Francona was too tired to realize he reached a personal milestone.
An extra-long day at the ballpark left everyone exhausted.
Francona reached his 1,500th career win Thursday night when Cleveland bounced back from a tough loss in the opener to pound the Toronto Blue Jays 13-4 in the second game of a makeup doubleheader.
When he reached the clubhouse, Francona was approached by Indians ace Corey Kluber.
Indians reinstate Cody Allen from paternity list
CLEVELAND (AP) — Closer Cody Allen has been reinstated from the paternity list by the Cleveland Indians.
Allen left the team Wednesday when his wife, Mallory, gave birth to the couple's first child. He returned to Cleveland from Baltimore, where the Indians were playing a four-game series.
The right-hander is 0-2 with a 2.00 ERA and is 15 for 16 in save chances for the Indians, who have won eight of nine.
