Hechavarria is a light hitter known for his defense. He gives New York a legitimate, established shortstop who could be a backup to young starter Amed Rosario. Even with a crowded infield, that's something the Mets were lacking as they opened spring training.

Frazier hit a game-ending homer in the 11th inning, and the Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1 on Sunday for a split of their four-game series.
Josh Harrison grounded out and Adeiny Hechavarria struck out before Frazier drove a 3-0 pitch from Brandon Kintzler (1-3) deep to right. It was Frazier's fifth homer of the season.

Cuban baseball player smugglers seek lenient sentences
MIAMI (AP) — A sports agent and a baseball trainer are seeking lenient prison sentences after their convictions in Miami of smuggling Cuban players to the U.S.
Court records filed this week show agent Bartolo Hernandez is asking for a three-year prison term and trainer Julio Estrada wants no more than five years. They were convicted by a jury in March after a six-week trial.
Prosecutors are asking a judge to exceed the nine-year maximum for both calculated under federal sentencing guidelines.
Hechavarria HR leads Rays over Yankees 2-1 at Mets’ park
NEW YORK (AP) — Displaced but not daunted, the Tampa Bay Rays hung tough in their temporary home.
Adeiny Hechavarria hit a tiebreaking homer off Sonny Gray in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Rays, hosting a series relocated to Citi Field because of Hurricane Irma, beat the New York Yankees 2-1 on Tuesday night.
Tampa Bay has split the first two games of the set played at the New York Mets' park.
"We're the home team. It didn't feel like we're the home team," Rays reliever Steve Cishek said.
Morrison homers again as Rays defeat Royals 5-3
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays are hanging around in the AL playoff chase thanks to their first series win at Kansas City since 2009.
Logan Morrison, Steven Souza Jr. and Adeiny Hechavarria each went deep and the Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3 on Wednesday night.
The Rays took two out of three and have won three consecutive series. The Royals lost 18 of 28 games in August, including six of seven to end the month. The Rays had lost their previous seven series at Kauffman Stadium.
Dickerson gets 4 hits as Rays beat Cardinals 7-3
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash watched as the Rays piled up 16 hits.
He enjoyed the performance very much.
Corey Dickerson had four hits, including two doubles, and Tampa Bay beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3 on Friday night.
"We've been waiting for one of those days to just rack up a bunch of hits," Cash said. "It's been a while, so it was good to see."
Snell shuts down Mariners; Rays hit 2 homers in 3-0 win
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — There was a long stretch early in the season when Blake Snell was the lone pitcher in the Tampa Bay rotation who couldn't get a win. Now he seems to be the only one who can.
Snell allowed just two hits in seven innings for his second consecutive victory, and the Rays beat the Seattle Mariners 3-0 on Sunday.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Corey Dickerson finally delivered a big hit for the Tampa Bay Rays with men on base.
Dickerson's broke out of an 0-for-21 slump with a three-run homer in the eighth inning that carried the Rays to a 4-1 win over the Cleveland Indians on Thursday night. Tampa Bay had scored only four runs in its previous five games.
Brewers’ Shaw injured by throw
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Travis Shaw left Saturday night's game in the second inning after being struck on the side of his face by a throw on a stolen base attempt.
Shaw walked off the field under his own power after lying on the ground for several seconds and being attended by trainers. Hernan Perez ran for him and replaced him at third base.
NEW YORK (AP) — Brett Gardner lined a slider from rookie Andrew Kittredge a half-dozen rows into the right-field seats leading off the 11th inning, circled the bases with his career-high 18th home run, rolled his helmet toward home plate and crossed with the winning run.

MIAMI (AP) — A September sentencing date has been set for a sports agent and a baseball trainer convicted in Miami of smuggling Cuban baseball players into the U.S.
Court records show a federal judge has set Sept. 29 for the sentencing of agent Bartolo Hernandez and trainer Julio Estrada, convicted by a jury in March after a six-week trial.
Prosecutors said Hernandez faces up to 15 years in prison and Estrada — convicted of more smuggling counts — faces a maximum of 35 years behind bars.

MIAMI (AP) — Dee Gordon is the Miami Marlins' new starting shortstop, and that's by default.
Adeiny Hechavarria and rookie J.T. Riddle became the third and fourth players on the left side the Marlins' infield to be sidelined by injuries since Sunday. Hechavarria was placed on the 10-day DL Wednesday with a strained abdominal muscle and is expected to be out a couple of weeks, and Riddle was scratched from the lineup after bruising his right index finger while taking grounders in pregame drills.
