Upbeat Huskers confident they’re on cusp of first victory
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — There's no tangible evidence to back them up, but first-year coach Scott Frost and his players sense a breakthrough is coming for a winless Nebraska team approaching the midway point of the season.
Mind you, this comes from a team with one of the worst defenses in the nation, the team that averages the most penalties and one that just lost by 17 points at Wisconsin.

Quarterback biggest question for Nebraska entering Troy game
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The circumstances for Nebraska are far from ideal as it eyes its first road game under new coach Scott Frost next week at Michigan.
The Cornhuskers went late into this week not knowing the status of true freshman quarterback Adrian Martinez, making their Saturday game against Troy a little trickier.
Martinez day-to-day; Frost says play might have been dirty
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez is day-to-day with a right knee injury and it might be close to game time Saturday until it is known if he can play against Troy.
Martinez was hurt on a short run with about 4 minutes left in the 33-28 loss to Colorado. Coach Scott Frost wouldn't disclose details about the injury Monday other than saying Martinez didn't sustain ligament damage.

Youth serving: 3 true freshmen win Big Ten starting QB jobs
In an earlier time, a true freshman starting quarterback wasn't necessarily unthinkable. It certainly was an outlier.
Not so much anymore, not in this age of what Rutgers offensive coordinator John McNulty calls the "bred quarterback," those players who immerse themselves in football year-round, get individual coaching from quarterback gurus and arrive on campus ready and expecting to play right away.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Two days after clarity came to Nebraska's quarterback situation, things got complicated again.

True freshman Adrian Martinez named Nebraska’s starting QB
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — True freshman Adrian Martinez has been named Nebraska's starting quarterback for the opener against Akron on Saturday.
Martinez was No. 1 on the Cornhuskers' depth chart released Sunday.
Martinez beat out redshirt freshman Tristan Gebbia in a close competition. He will be the first true freshman in program history to start an opener at quarterback.
Nebraska quarterback Patrick O'Brien has asked for his release and plans to transfer. The school confirmed yesterday that O'Brien's request will be granted. Former coach Mike Riley recruited O'Brien to play in a pro-style offense. New coach Scott Frost has brought his spread-option offense with him from Central Florida. Frost said on Tuesday he and his staff were beginning to give more practice snaps to the quarterbacks who were separating themselves in the competition. O'Brien's departure leaves the Huskers with just two scholarship quarterbacks in redshirt freshman Tristan Gebbia and freshman Adrian Martinez. They also have walk-on Andrew Bunch. Noah Vedral is practicing but won't play this fall per transfer rules. O'Brien appeared in three games as Tanner Lee's backup last season.

Nebraska QB Tanner Lee skipping senior year for NFL draft
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska quarterback Tanner Lee will skip his final year of eligibility and enter the NFL draft.
The move was not unexpected in the wake of coach Mike Riley's firing and Scott Frost's hiring.
"After weeks of prayer and consideration with my family, I've decided to enter the NFL Draft and pursue an opportunity that I feel is the best for myself and my family at this time," Lee said in a Twitter post on Thursday.
