Johnson leads Redskins to late scores, 16-13 win at Jaguars
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Josh Johnson's Madden rating should get a bump after his first NFL start in seven years.
Johnson, who played Madden NFL 19 to learn his new teammates' names, led Washington on two scoring drives in the fourth quarter to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 16-13 on Sunday.
Wentz tosses for 2 TDs, leads Eagles over Redskins 28-13
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Carson Wentz was at his best back on the move again.
Wentz tossed two touchdown passes, Darren Sproles ran for a score and the Philadelphia Eagles stayed in the hunt for the NFC East title with a 28-13 victory over the depleted Washington Redskins on Monday night.
The Eagles (6-6) won consecutive games for the first time since Nick Foles led them to a Super Bowl victory over the Patriots.
Red-hot Texans visit Redskins in meeting of division leaders
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Jay Gruden occasionally has to remind people his team is in 6-3 and in first place.
"That's a heck of deal after nine games," the Washington Redskins' coach said. "But I'm also excited with the fact that we have not played our best yet, and I think the best is yet to come."
Halfway to NFL awards: decisions and lots of candidates
By the time every NFL team has played eight games, there are some heavily established favorites for The Associated Press NFL awards that are handed out on Super Bowl eve.
Not this year.
MVP? Lots of candidates — and not just quarterbacks.
Coach of the Year? Nearly every division has a contender.
Comeback Player? Some likely Hall of Famers are in the mix there.
FANTASY PLAYS: Burning questions for NFL Week 10
A look at some key fantasy football questions for Week 10:
WHICH UNDER THE RADAR PLAYERS HAVE THE BEST CHANCE FOR A BIG GAME THIS WEEK?
Several Washington players — quarterback Alex Smith, running back Adrian Peterson, wide receiver Maurice Harris and tight end Vernon Davis — all have the potential to post big numbers this week against the Buccaneers.
Peterson, Watt, Luck, A-Rod? Who is top comeback player?
Of all the NFL seasonal awards, the one shaping up as the closest and most intriguing is for Comeback Player of the Year.
First-place Redskins in search of passing game vs. Falcons
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — All games and no practice reps make Alex Smith a dull quarterback.
At 5-2, NFC East-leading Skins off to best start since 2008
WASHINGTON (AP) — Yes, the Washington Redskins are 5-2 for the first time in a decade.
And now, forget that the when they started that well in 2008, they ended up 8-8.
Yes, they're 5-1 against the NFC for the first time since 2005.
Yes, they're leading their division on the strength of a three-game winning streak.
Redskins off to best start since 2008; Giants 1-7 again
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — There was a lot of laughter and smiles in the Washington Redskins' locker room, the exact opposite of what was happening down the hall where the New York Giants were dressing.
It's the difference between winning and losing.
The Redskins (5-2) are winning these days. They won their third in a row and kept their 1½-game lead in the NFC East with a 20-13 win over the hapless Giants, who are 1-7 for the second consecutive season.
Giants’ defense gave team a chance to win despite trades
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Trading cornerback Eli Apple and 2016 All-Pro defensive tackle Damon Harrison in the last week wasn't the reason the New York Giants lost to the Washington Redskins.
The new-look defense, which was also missing injured linebacker Alex Ogletree, actually was the reason the Giants had a chance to win in the 20-13 loss Sunday that sent New York (1-7) to its fifth straight defeat.
Redskins’ offense has scored 1 2nd-half TD all season
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Locked in a 7-7 tie against the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Redskins took the second-half kickoff and drove to first-and-goal at the 9.
On first down, Alex Smith had tight end Jeremy Sprinkle open in the end zone, but they were not on the same page and the throw was incomplete. On third down from the 1, Adrian Peterson took a handoff and ran into teammate Vernon Davis, resulting in a 2-yard loss.
Redskins riding run defense, rushing offense to 4-2 start
WASHINGTON (AP) — With Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne anchoring the defensive line, and Adrian Peterson hardly looking like a 33-year-old, the Washington Redskins have established what sort of team they are. It's quite a drastic shift from who they've been under coach Jay Gruden until now.
Their defense stops the run — gasp! — and their offense — get this! — moves the ball on the ground.
"It starts up front, in the trenches," Gruden said Monday. "Those big guys are doing a great job."
Redskins’ Thompson at peace returning to scene of injury
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Chris Thompson feels the pain, not the nerves.
Eleven months ago, the running back was in the middle of a career season with the Washington Redskins before he broke his right fibula on a freak play at the Superdome against the New Orleans Saints. He returns to the site of that injury Monday night looking like his old self but not quite feeling back to normal.

Running on full: Redskins’ Adrian Peterson is going strong
Adrian Peterson knows how most people see running backs in their 30s.
So he asked Washington Redskins legend John Riggins how he dealt with it.
"He was like, 'I'm taking care of my body and I have that mindset of you still got it and that determination. Most importantly, playing real hard,'" Peterson said. "Those are some of the same things that keep me going. It's always good to get confirmation from guys who have done it before."
Redskins LT Trent Williams has ‘minor’ procedure on knee
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams had what coach Jay Gruden called "a minor" procedure on his knee and is expected to be able to play in the team's next game.
Gruden said Monday that Williams was scheduled for the "bursa sac cleanup" during the bye week and should return for Washington's game at the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 8.
The knee has been "irritating" Williams for a couple of weeks, Gruden said.
Peterson runs for 120 yards, 2 TDs, Skins top Packers 31-17
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — A week removed from what he called "an embarrassment," Adrian Peterson turned in his first 100-yard game in more than 10 months.
Rodgers, Peterson meet again when Packers visit Redskins
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Adrian Peterson has played against Aaron Rodgers more than a dozen times and knows not to be surprised by anything.
So when the prolific quarterback led the Green Bay Packers to a comeback victory in Week 1 and played well on an injured left knee in Week 2, it was par for the course.
Redskins’ offensive line living up to Hogs 2.0 nickname
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Long before Alex Smith and Adrian Peterson joining the Redskins was ever a possibility, Trent Williams made up Hogs 2.0 T-shirts for Washington's offensive linemen.
The original "Hogs" offensive line paved the way for three Super Bowl titles, so this group has a long way to go before they can be compared to that group.
Big 2nd quarter lifts Redskins to dominant win over Cards
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — For the last few minutes of the first quarter and all of the second, Washington's offense couldn't be stopped.
Whether it was Alex Smith passing or Adrian Peterson and Chris Thompson running, the Redskins simply dominated Arizona up front and the 24-6 Washington victory on Sunday was even more dominant than that score would indicate.
Smith, Peterson led Redskins to 24-6 victory at Arizona
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Alex Smith looked like his old self. So did Adrian Peterson.
When the 34-year-old Smith wasn't carving up the Arizona defense, the 33-year-old Peterson was running through it.
The result was a 24-6 Washington victory on Sunday, coach Jay Gruden's first win in a season opener in five tries, and it was even more dominant than the final score would indicate.
FANTASY PLAYS: Some last tidbits before your football drafts
With Fantasy football drafts and auctions reaching their apex this weekend, here are some tidbits to keep in mind:
Redskins hope Smith, Peterson can lead them back to playoffs
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Alex Smith and Adrian Peterson sat a few feet away from each other as fresh-faced college players at the Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York in late 2005 and never imaged this would happen.
Twelve NFL seasons later for Smith and 11 for Peterson and they're now in the same backfield together with the Washington Redskins.

Adrian Peterson impresses in Redskins debut vs. Broncos
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Adrian Peterson didn't mind a healthy diet of action in the preseason 12 years into an NFL career that hasn't included much exhibition work.
"So many years I begged to play in the preseason and was shut down," Peterson said. "They didn't have to beg me at all to play this week."
Adrian Peterson ready for his next move with Redskins
WASHINGTON (AP) — Adrian Peterson believes he still has something left.
The 33-year-old running back had his first practice with the Redskins on Tuesday, a day after signing a one-year deal with Washington.
"I can give a lot. I really believe that," Peterson said following his first practice. "I feel like the sky is the limit."
Injuries and opportunity limited Peterson to 13 games over the past two seasons. He averaged 3.4 yards per carry in 10 games last season with the Saints and Cardinals.
Peterson signs, Kelley is still Redskins’ top running back
A slimmed-down Rob Kelley is likely to remain Washington's top running back even though Adrian Peterson is joining the Redskins.
Amid four injuries in their backfield, the Redskins signed the 33-year-old four-time All-Pro running back on Monday. But Kelley, the former "Fat Rob" who lost weight and added speed to his repertoire, should still be considered the front-runner to start Week 1 at the Arizona Cardinals.
Adrian Peterson signs with running back-depleted Redskins
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Washington Redskins have signed four-time All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson.
The team announced the deal Monday after meeting with Peterson. Jamaal Charles and Orleans Darkwa also visited the Redskins the past two days after several injuries at the position, with the team opting to sign Peterson and De'Veon Smith.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Giants passed on an heir apparent to two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning and took a running back that many think is the best to come out of college in decade.
The Giants selected Penn State's Saquon Barkley with the second pick overall, a player many football experts consider the best running back to enter the NFL since Adrian Peterson came out of Oklahoma in 2007.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Saquon Barkley is the best player in this year's draft. Yet he might not go in the first handful of picks Thursday night.
Blame the desperation to find quarterbacks in great part for the possibility that the Penn State All-America running back could fall well below where his talent, character and versatility warrant.
Promises turn into paydays as NFL business year begins
All those promises worth millions upon millions to free agents turned into paydays Wednesday when the NFL's business year began.
Of course, teams needed to clear salary cap space or rejigger their ledgers to make it work, and they'll still be doing so for months.
While the likes of Drew Brees, Malcolm Butler and Andrew Norwell cashed in bigtime, having reached agreements in the past two days before everything became official, some value entered the marketplace.
Adrian Peterson's short stint in Arizona is over. Jordy Nelson long and productive stay in Green Bay has ended, too.
Adrian Peterson's short stint in Arizona is over. Jordy Nelson long and productive stay in Green Bay has ended, too.
Meanwhile, Drew Brees is staying put in the Big Easy, Case Keenum is headed to the Rocky Mountains, and Kirk Cousins will make his first visit as a free agent to Minnesota. The Vikings long have been considered a natural landing spot for one of the most valuable quarterbacks available.
PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals finally found their quarterback.
A person with knowledge of the situation said Sam Bradford and the Cardinals have agreed to a one-year, $20 million contract with a second-year option, also for $20 million. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because contracts cannot be made public until Wednesday.
Cardinals release running back Adrian Peterson
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have released running back Adrian Peterson after a half-season in the desert that included a pair of impressive games and a season-ending injury.
The seven-time All-Pro running back began last season with New Orleans but, after barely playing there, was dealt to the Cardinals.
Adrian Peterson, Ndamukong Suh among NFL veterans reportedly being cut
Reports from ESPN's Adam Schefter and Jeff Darlington indicate that NFL veterans Adrian Peterson and Ndamukong Suh will soon be without teams.
The NFL draft released its finalized draft order on Tuesday morning, setting the stage for the New Orleans Saints and 31 other teams to make their picks.
Saints did get conditional pick they received from Arizona in Adrian Peterson trade
MOBILE, Ala. — The New Orleans Saints will get the sixth-round pick they received when they traded running back Adrian Peterson to the Arizona Cardinals, according to general manager Mickey Loomis.
It's been several months since the Saints and Vikings faced off in the Monday night opener in September 2017.
Sam Bradford is no longer the starting quarterback for Minnesota and running back Adrian Peterson was shipped off to Arizona from the Big Easy not too long after.
Saints head back to Minnesota with a team that is ‘night and day’ from season opener
The New Orleans Saints are about to take their season back to where it started.
New Orleans opened this season at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minnesota, a Monday Night Football showcase the Saints lost, falling 29-19 in a game that felt even worse than the final score.
Friday’s Sports In Brief
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers founder and owner Jerry Richardson is under investigation for allegations of workplace misconduct.
The team said former White House Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles is overseeing the investigation by a Los Angeles-based law firm.
Cardinals’ Adrian Peterson placed on injured reserve
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Adrian Peterson was placed on injured reserve Friday because of a neck injury, ending the running back's season after only six games with the Arizona Cardinals.
Acquired from New Orleans on Oct. 10, Peterson ran for 448 yards — 314 in his first three games — and two touchdowns on 129 carries and had nine catches for 66 yards for the Cardinals. He missed the last two games. In four games for the Saints, he ran for 81 yards on 24 carries and caught two passes for 4 yards.
Cardinals rule Adrian Peterson out of game vs Titans
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — For the second week in a row, the Arizona Cardinals will be without running back Adrian Peterson due to a neck injury.
The 2012 NFL MVP, acquired in a trade with New Orleans early this season, has been ruled out for Sunday's home game against the Tennessee Titans.
Peterson did not practice all week after sitting out Sunday's home loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He was hurt two Sundays ago in the Cardinals' victory over Jacksonville.
Soaring Saints tandem, Vikings ascension accentuate Adrian Peterson’s fall
Adrian Petersons worth was undeniable five years ago when he won NFL Most Valuable Player while carrying the Vikings into the playoffs. Sadly, his value today is equally unmistakable because of the ways in which his former teams have catapulted into the top four spots in the NFC while he quietly fades away in the desert.
