Cardinals go for series sweep of Nationals
St. Louis Cardinals (20-10, first in the NL Central) vs. Washington Nationals (12-17, fourth in the NL East)
NEW YORK (AP) — Second baseman Daniel Murphy has been activated by the Washington Nationals before Tuesday's series opener at the New York Yankees and is set to make his season debut, batting fifth as the designated hitter.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals have reinstated third baseman Anthony Rendon from the 10-day disabled list and optioned infielder Adrian Sanchez to Triple-A Syracuse.
Rendon was in Saturday's lineup against the Phillies, batting second behind Bryce Harper.
Rendon missed 19 games with what the team called a contusion to his big toe after fouling a pitch off his foot on April 13.
Manager Dave Martinez said Rendon will wear protective padding over the toe.
Nationals demote Matt Reynolds, send Shawn Kelley to disabled list
The Washington Nationals, after calling up three pitchers from Triple-A Syracuse in three days last weekend, made a flurry of roster moves before Tuesday night's game in San Francisco.
But none of them involved calling up a pitcher from Syracuse.
The Nationals sent veteran reliever Shawn Kelley to the disabled list and demoted to Triple-A veteran infielder/outfielder Matt Reynolds, who began the year at Syracuse but had just one hit in 12 at-bats for the big-league club.
Sanchez spends night in hospital after taking pitch to chest
WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Nationals infielder Adrian Sanchez is doing well one day after being hit in the chest by a pitch, according to a team spokeswoman.
Sanchez was sent to a local hospital Saturday night for a CT scan.
"He checked out fine. They kept him overnight to monitor his breathing and he's been discharged," Amanda Comak said Sunday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — After a decade in the minors, not even a body blow from a hard-thrown baseball was going to keep Adrian Sanchez from taking another swing.
