49ers acquire OL Shon Coleman from Browns for 7th rounder
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have acquired offensive lineman Shon Coleman from the Cleveland Browns for a 2019 seventh-round draft pick.
Coleman still must pass a physical for the deal made Friday to become official. The Niners were seeking more depth on the offensive line as they cut their roster to 53 players before Saturday's deadline.
Coleman was originally a third-round pick by the Browns in 2016. He started 16 games at right tackle last season.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is going to play at least one possession in the preseason opener Thursday night against the Dallas Cowboys, coach Kyle Shanahan said.
"He'll play somewhat into the first quarter. We'll see how long the opening drive is," Shanahan said Tuesday.
Each day leading up to the 2018 NFL draft, I’ll break down one of my top 50 prospects. In some cases, we had to make tough omissions because of injuries, poor pre-draft workouts or incomplete information. 49ers release receiver Bruce Ellington

"Bruce had done a good job with us but we had a bunch of guys who were very similar in their skill set," Shanahan said. "I thought, give Bruce a chance to go somewhere else. He handled everything great."
49ers have busy opening day of free agency
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — A year after spending most of free agency on the sideline, the San Francisco 49ers had a busy start to the new league year as coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch begin a massive rebuilding process.
Freeman’s 3 TDs lead Falcons to 41-13 rout of hapless 49ers
ATLANTA (AP) — Devonta Freeman more than made up for his first fumble of the season.
Freeman rushed for 139 yards and three touchdowns Sunday, leading the Falcons to a 41-13 rout of the San Francisco 49ers that clinched Atlanta's first winning season since 2012.
The third-year back capped his big day with a 34-yard touchdown run .
Berry’s 2 picks carry Chiefs to 29-28 win over Falcons
ATLANTA (AP) — Eric Berry returned an interception for a touchdown, and then brought back another pick for a 2-point conversion that gave the Kansas City Chiefs an improbable 29-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
The Falcons, rallying from a 27-16 deficit, went ahead 28-27 on Matt Ryan's 5-yard touchdown pass to Aldrick Robinson with 4:32 remaining.
Schaub shines in return as Falcons top Redskins 23-17
ATLANTA (AP) — Matt Ryan had little to show for his two possessions — no completions, no first downs and no fun.
At least he could then enjoy watching Matt Schaub's successful homecoming.
Making a successful return to his first NFL home, Schaub passed for 179 yards, leading three scoring drives, and the Atlanta Falcons beat the Washington Redskins 23-17 on Thursday night.
"It was good to be back in the Georgia Dome," Schaub said.
