Flight returns to LAX 3 times for 3 separate problems
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hawaiian Airlines says a flight bound for Maui returned to the gate at Los Angeles International Airport three times for three separate problems before finally being canceled.
Spokesman Alex Da Silva says Flight 33 took off and landed again twice on Saturday. A third time the jetliner pushed back from the gate and then came back.
Da Silva says each return was "due to separate and unrelated faults with different systems." He didn't elaborate.
Pepper spray discharges during flight to Hawaii, 15 treated
HONOLULU (AP) — A can of pepper spray went off inside a plane headed from Oakland, California, to Maui on Friday, requiring emergency help for several people aboard, Hawaiian Airlines said.
Twelve passengers and three flight attendants were treated for respiratory issues and released by emergency responders at the airport in Kahului, Hawaii, airline spokesman Alex Da Silva said.

Molokai loses ’Ohana by Hawaiian flight to Maui for 90 days
WAILUKU, Hawaii (AP) — 'Ohana by Hawaiian has begun operating a temporary flight schedule for Molokai, which will eliminate the direct flight between the Friendly Isle and Maui as well as a midday round trip between Molokai and Oahu.
The airline says the change is necessary as an aircraft undergoes maintenance.
Gay New Milford pastor continues to serve, despite ruling against gay clergy
NEW MILFORD - After the United Methodist Church’s highest court reaffirmed its anti-homosexual stance in several rulings Friday night, an openly gay pastor said he will continue his ministry as before.
The Rev. Alex da Silva Souto, who came out to his parishioners at the New Milford United Methodist Church last May, said he is disappointed in the church Judicial Council’s decisions, but is no more fearful for his job than he was earlier.

Next week, the highest court of the United Methodist Church will decide whether people like him — “queer men” — can continue as members of the clergy. In the worst-case scenario, da Silva Souto said, he could have his license to preach his faith revoked.
“We don’t know what's going to come down,” he said.
KONA — For Kealoha Curnan-Medina, flying nonstop from Kona to Lihue will make seeing family easier.
“It’s great for family to come visit,” she said.
Curnan-Medina, who lives on the Big Island but is from Kauai, was traveling from Kona to Lihue Sunday morning aboard Hawaiian Airlines’ inaugural direct flight between the two islands.
“I bought a ticket just to be on the first flight,” she said. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this to happen. I hope it stays forever.”
HONOLULU — A record number of passengers flew with Hawaiian Airlines last year.
Just over 11 million people used the airline in 2016, a 3.5 percent increase from 2015. The passenger count of 11,050,911 marks 12 straight years of growth.
“Our passenger count increased again as we added more seats and our aircraft were fuller in 2016,” said Alex Da Silva, Hawaiian Airlines spokesman.

NEW MILFORD — The Rev. Alex da Silva Souto has had a whirlwind year that has left him “heartened and feeling a great deal of support,” but wondering if he’ll be allowed to preach to his New Milford United Methodist congregation in coming months.
NEW MILFORD — The New Milford United Methodist Church voted last week to join about 800 other Methodist churches in rejecting the denomination’s stance on homosexuality.
The stance, approved by 90 percent of the church’s nearly 300 members, makes the church a “reconciling congregation,” meaning that it officially disregards portions of the church’s Book of Disciplines saying that “homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching.”
