CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Republican state lawmaker Carol Miller won a congressional seat in West Virginia, holding off an aggressive Democratic challenge Tuesday as the GOP retained the state's three U.S. House districts in a state Donald Trump dominated two years ago.
Miller defeated hard-charging Democratic state Sen. Richard Ojeda in the 3rd District.
Two Republican incumbents — U.S. Reps. David McKinley and Alex Mooney — cruised to re-election in the state's other districts.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Two years after Donald Trump easily won West Virginia, voters are returning to the polls for the first time in one of his Republican strongholds.
Tuesday's primary includes races for U.S. Senate, U.S. House and the Legislature.
Congressman Evan Jenkins is among six candidates seeking the Republican U.S. Senate nomination. The ballot for his 3rd District House seat is packed with seven Republicans and four Democrats.
Candidates in the primary election races for U.S. House in West Virginia, including names, occupations and hometowns:
Ralph Baxter, retired international law firm CEO, Wheeling
Kendra Fershee, West Virginia University law professor, Morgantown
I keep asking a "why" question that to those who understand how the wheels of government run on political terms, can be easily answered.
A few weeks ago, I pointed out that it was Rep. Evan Jenkins, the 3rd District congressman, who was addressing the crowd at a Yeager Airport groundbreaking project. At the time, I noted that Yeager and Charleston are not in Jenkins' district but, instead, in the district of fellow GOP Rep. Alex Mooney.

Democrat challenging Mooney for House seat
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — The former West Virginia campaign director for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has launched her own campaign to unseat Republican Congressman Alex Mooney.
Talley Sergent, a Charleston resident and former U.S. State Department employee, says West Virginians are worried about their health care, jobs and future.
She says Mooney voted to repeal and replace the Affordable Care with a Republican substitute that would take away health care for many.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — A research group that examines how government policies affect low-income Americans says the latest proposal to replace the Affordable Care Act will particularly hurt rural communities including those in West Virginia.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — At a Town Hall meeting that drew 600 people, Democratic U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin says the Affordable Care Act needs repair but the current plan to replace it represents bad politics by Republicans trying to keep promises to repeal the program established under then-President Barack Obama.
At the fourth such meeting organized by health-care advocates, Manchin says the pending House Republican proposal would make things worse.
