ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis coach Mike Yeo turned to desperate measures to try and snap his team out of its roughest stretch of the season.
Yeo decided that the fourth line would start the game Wednesday against the Detroit Red Wings.
He told the players about his unorthodox choice minutes before they took the ice.
"It got a chuckle out of the guys," said Scottie Upshall, a member of the trio.
St. Louis — On the first night of life without Tomas Tatar, well, the Red Wings could have used his offensive ability.
Tatar obviously had the ability to score some goals and the Red Wings desperately needed that Wednesday in a 2-1 to the St. Louis Blues.
Goaltender Jimmy Howard was really good, stopping 24 shots and keeping the Red Wings close, but the lone goal was Andreas Athanasiou's 13th, at 18 minutes 15 seconds of the third.
Alex Ovechkin has hardest shot at skills competition
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Alex Ovechkin had already clinched the hardest shot title at the NHL All-Star game skills competition before taking his final shot.
All that was left was to try to top 100 mph, and Ovechkin did it.
The Washington star was the only player the break the century mark Saturday night, coming on his second try. Ovechkin's first attempt went 98.8 mph.
"Why not?" Ovechkin said, smiling. "And, I did. Of course it's special to get that type of win."

Hutton made 36 saves, Brayden Schenn scored in his fourth straight game and St. Louis beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-1 on Thursday night.
Alexander Steen scored for the fourth time in his last five games, Paul Stastny also scored and Alex Pietrangelo had a pair of assists for the Blues, who have won four of five.

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Alex Pietrangelo celebrated his 28th birthday by scoring his first goal in more than two months. And, it ended up being a winner for the St. Louis Blues.

Defenseman Matt Dumba ended up with the puck because goalie Devan Dubnyk turned aside a slapshot from Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, and Dumba was able to redirect in the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over the Blues on Saturday because center Charlie Coyles attempted shot on net veered into the crease.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Under pressure in a shootout, Carter Hutton looked like a poised veteran.
The backup goalie stopped both attempts he faced, and Brayden Schenn and Alexander Steen scored in the tiebreaker to lead the St. Louis Blues past the Arizona Coyotes 3-2 on Thursday night.
St. Louis beat the Coyotes for the 12th straight time and has won seven of eight overall.
