Gophers striving to bounce back from injury-ravaged season
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The breakthrough that Minnesota enjoyed two years ago became an afterthought last season, as injuries mounted and losses piled up.
Finishing 15-17 was a rough follow-up for the Gophers to their only NCAA Tournament berth under coach Richard Pitino.
"I'm a lot better when we have a healthy roster as a coach," Pitino said. "I think that at the end of the day when you're building a program, to get stability it takes some time. I thought we were there last year."

Gophers sophomore guard Amir Coffey is on the road to a long recovery process after successful surgery on his right shoulder Wednesday.
Coffey, a 6-foot-8 Hopkins native, was announced last week as being out for the rest of the season after he continued to have pain in his shoulder. His timetable for recovery after surgery is expected to be four to six months.
Minnesota’s Coffey to have season-ending shoulder surgery

Losing streak reaches seven as Indiana dominates Gophers
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The last time the Gophers men lost to Indiana on the basketball court, it was in early January at Williams Arena, and the home team was playing its first game without suspended center Reggie Lynch and injured guard Amir Coffey.
A month later, coach Richard Pitino’s team is 1-10 without Lynch, who isn’t going to be back this season while dealing with an appeal for being found responsible by a University of Minnesota panel for an alleged sexual assault in 2016.
Injured Gophers guards Coffey, McBrayer still day to day
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The status of Minnesota starting guards Amir Coffey and Dupree McBrayer remains uncertain for the upcoming game at Indiana.
Gophers coach Richard Pitino said Thursday that Coffey and McBrayer are still considered day to day. The Gophers play the Hoosiers Friday.
Coffey has missed the past three games and eight of the past 10 because of the shoulder injury. The sophomore is the team's third-leading scorer.
Gophers sophomore guard Amir Coffey wanted to be out there with his team Tuesday night vs. Nebraska, but he missed his third consecutive game because of a shoulder injury.
Coffey, the Gophers third leading scorer at 14 points per game, tweaked his previously injured right shoulder in a 77-69 loss to Northwestern on Jan. 23. He hasnt been back since.
Ann Arbor – A team can make or break its March resume in February.
Michigan was pushed to the brink and nearly dealt a blemish against a scuffling Minnesota team.
But in the end, the Wolverines were able to overcome poor free-throw shooting and huge games by Minnesota's Nate Mason and Isaiah Washington in a wild 76-73 overtime win Saturday at Crisler Center.
IOWA CITY Last year when Jordan Murphy dominated on the glass against Iowa, the Gophers mens basketball team was able to pull out a hard-fought victory that helped turn the season around.
Much like last season, Murphy made it a tough night for the Hawkeyes boxing him out Tuesday night. This time, though, his 21 points and 17 rebounds werent enough in a 94-80 Gophers loss in front of an announced 10,371 fans at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Amir Coffey knew where he wanted to go with the ball Saturday. He had a good feeling about how to play with his teammates.
But the mental part is one thing — being back to 100 percent physically is another.
Things were just a little off when Coffey returned after a five-game absence because of a right shoulder injury. The 6-8 Gophers sophomore guard is still working back into shape.
NEW YORK Gophers sophomore guard Amir Coffey started in the teams game Saturday against Ohio State at Madison Square Garden.
Coffey, a 6-foot-8 former Hopkins standout, had missed the past five games with a right shoulder injury. He averaged 14.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 31.4 minutes in the first 19 games this season.
In his last game, Coffey had 16 points and three assists in 34 minutes when he suffered the shoulder injury in a win Jan. 3 against Illinois at home.
McBrayer leads Minnesota over Penn State
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (AP) — The cheers and hollers coming from the Minnesota locker room were audible at least 20 feet away, deep inside Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center.
It sounded like joy, a feeling the Golden Gophers hadn't experienced in at least 10 days after losing two of their best players — one to suspension, the other to injury.
"They were dealt a difficult situation," Minnesota coach Richard Pitino said. "And they responded well, so hopefully this gives us great confidence."
When asked to describe how much Amir Coffey means to the Gophers basketball team, Richard Pitino really couldnt find a good way to sum it up.
Pitinos answer was simply: Are we missing Amir? Yes, were missing Amir.
The injured 6-foot-8 sophomore guard is an NBA prospect and arguably Pitinos most talented player.
Coffey doesnt just help the Gophers in one area. He can lead them in scoring and fill up the stat sheet on any night and be the teams best perimeter defender.
Pitino loses cool, Gophers lose game to Purdue 81-47
Richard Pitino lost his cool on the sidelines in the first half Saturday morning after his senior point guard Nate Mason got nailed in the throat by Purdues big man Isaac Haas.
The nasty blow appeared unintentional, but it was enough to get Pitino a technical foul after jawing at the officials sticking up for his player.
The Williams Arena crowd got fired up to fuel Minnesotas players for a few minutes while taking an early lead, but emotion could only carry them so far.
Nate Mason and Jordan Murphy spent the end of Wednesdays 23-point loss to Northwestern on the bench, having each fouled out. The two All-Big Ten players stared at the court with glum looks as their teammates tried to finish the game heavily undermanned.
Already down two starters before the game, the Gophers were missing their top four players by the time it was all over.
We definitely know we should be on the court, Murphy said. We feel guilty about it. We know what we got to do.
ROSEMONT, Ill. The Gophers basketball team held a meeting earlier this week to remind themselves they still had a long season left to prove critics wrong. Fans and outside observers basically are counting them out of Big Ten contention minus impact players Reggie Lynch and Amir Coffey.
There will be a lot more doubters after their worst loss in two years.
With Reggie Lynch, Amir Coffey out, who must step up for Gophers? (Answer: Everyone)
Richard Pitinos message in a team meeting this week was all about getting his players to believe they had enough talent left without starters Reggie Lynch and Amir Coffey to reach their goal of making the NCAA tournament.
There might not be a perfect word to describe everything that is happening with the Gophers men’s basketball program right now, but star forward Jordan Murphy came up with a pretty good one at Tuesday’s media access in advance of Wednesday’s game at Northwestern.
“This week’s been very eventful, obviously, with the injury and suspension and stuff,” Murphy said.
Johnson’s career day lifts Indiana past Minnesota 75-71

Gophers backcourt could return to full-strength Saturday against Harvard
Richard Pitino went to dinner with his family Saturday evening, but the Gophers men’s basketball coach kept checking his phone for any news on point guard Nate Mason.
Mason left in the second half of that afternoon’s victory over Florida Atlantic after injuring his left ankle. He couldn’t put any weight on his leg as he was helped into the locker room. So coaches, fans and teammates feared the worst.
Murphy has double-double; Minnesota beats Oral Roberts 77-63
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota had more than a week to try and bounce back from a rough three-game stretch that included a pair of road losses and a narrow one-point home win.
It seems the rest paid off for the Golden Gophers.
Jordan Murphy scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season to lift Minnesota to a 77-63 win over Oral Roberts on Thursday night.
Murphy’s double-double helps Gophers hold off Drake
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota was reminded of a valuable lesson on Monday night when Drake had the Golden Gophers on the ropes. When in doubt, get the ball to Jordan Murphy.
Murphy posted his 12th straight double-double to start the season with 24 points and 18 rebounds, and Minnesota held off Drake 68-67.
"He did it with sheer will," Gophers coach Richard Pitino said. "He just got it done the old-fashioned way."

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jordan Murphy posted his 12th straight double-double to start the season with 24 points and 18 rebounds, and Minnesota held off Drake 68-67 on Monday night.

Ore Arogundade led the Bulldogs (5-5) with 15 points, while Graham Woodward added 15 and De'Antae McMurray 12.
LINCOLN, Neb. Two seasons ago, the Gophers were being obliterated by nearly 40 points in the second half at Nebraska. Just to keep from running up the score, Cornhuskers coach Tim Miles played mostly his reserves for the last five minutes of the game in a 25-point win.
Richard Pitinos team has come a long way since then.
