DETROIT (AP) — Andreas Athanasiou got the Detroit Red Wings' offense going, and Jimmy Howard backed it up.
Athanasiou scored twice, including a penalty shot, and Jimmy Howard made 40 saves in his 500th game to lead the Red Wings to a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night.
Frans Nielsen scored to break a 2-2 tie late in the second period.
"(Athanasiou) doing what he does best in the first period, Frans burying one in the second, that's all we needed tonight," Howard said. "It was nice."
Struggling Red Wings snap 3-game skid beating Predators 3-2
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Goalie Jimmy Howard feels really, really comfortable playing at Bridgestone Arena.

Petry helps Canadiens hold off Red Wings 3-2
DETROIT (AP) — Jeff Petry finally scored a goal against the Red Wings in Detroit, and it turned out to be decisive.
Petry scored 19 seconds into the third period, and the Montreal Canadiens held on for a 3-2 victory over the Red Wings on Tuesday night. Petry, a Michigan native, is the son of former Tigers pitcher Dan Petry, who was a member of the Detroit team that won the World Series in 1984. Jeff Petry's goal Tuesday was the 54th of his NHL career, but the first in Detroit.
Flames rally for 5-3 win, hand Red Wings 6th straight loss
DETROIT (AP) — Johnny Gaudreau capped a memorable day with another splendid performance.
Gaudreau had a goal and three assists, and the Calgary Flames rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night. Earlier in the day, Gaudreau was named the NHL's second star for the month of December — and he was part of the Pacific Division All-Star roster, which was also released Wednesday.
Athanasiou’s OT goal give Red Wings 3-2 win over Bruins
DETROIT (AP) — Andreas Athanasiou has become a more consistent player this season, and the score sheet is starting to reflect it.
Athanasiou tied it midway through the third period and scored 49 seconds into overtime to lift the Detroit Red Wings over the Boston Bruins 3-2 on Wednesday night.
The 24-year-old Athanasiou leads Detroit with nine goals, including five with three assists in his past six games.
Anderson stops 2 penalty shots, Senators beat Red Wings 2-1
OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Detroit coach Jeff Blashill was quick to credit Ottawa goalie Craig Anderson.
Anderson stopped two third-period penalty shots and Drake Batherson scored in his NHL debut to help the Senators beat the Red Wings 2-1 on Thursday night.
"Those are real players taking the penalty shots, so good for Craig Anderson," Blashill said. "He's been a good goalie in the league for a long time. He made two critical plays at critical moments."
Green leads Red Wings to 6-1 win over Coyotes
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings are playing inspired hockey after a sluggish start to the season.
Defenseman Mike Green had a goal and two assists and the Red Wings extended their winning streak to four games with a 6-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday night.
Detroit has won seven of its last eight to get back to .500 (8-8-2) after a 1-7-2 start.
Red Wings rally past Rangers 3-2 in OT
DETROIT (AP) — There was time for one more good chance in overtime before the clock would run out. Andreas Athanasiou took the puck near the blue line, skated in and backhanded it toward the front of the goal, where Dylan Larkin was open.
"I saw the lane to the net," Larkin said. "I knew he was going to get it to me, so I just tried to put myself on the far side of the net."

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Michael Rasmussen, Andreas Athanasiou and Trevor Daley scored in a 5:47 span in the second period, and Harri Sateri made 29 saves in the Detroit Red Wings' 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday.
Ryan Haggerty and Teddy Blueger scored for the Penguins.
Casey DeSmith started for Pittsburgh, and allowed all three goals on 10 shots in his half of the game. Tristan Jarry made 20 saves.
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings have agreed to a two-year, $6.6 million contract with Anthony Mantha.
The Red Wings announced the move with the restricted free agent Wednesday, keeping the 23-year-old wing after he led the team with 24 goals last season.
Mantha had 48 points in 80 games last season. He has 43 goals and 44 assists in two-plus seasons with the Red Wings. Detroit drafted him 20th overall in 2013.
Red Wings re-sign Athanasiou to 2-year contract
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed left wing Andreas Athanasiou to a two-year contract.
The 23-year-old Athanasiou set career highs with 17 assists and 33 points in 71 games last season. He has 43 goals and 33 assists in 172 career games — all with Detroit.
Athanasiou was selected by the Red Wings in the fourth round of the 2012 draft. He made his NHL debut in 2015.
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings have agreed to terms with forwards Tyler Bertuzzi and Martin Frk on Monday.
Detroit re-signed Bertuzzi with a $2.8 million, two-year deal and Frk with a $1.05 million, one-year contract.
The 23-year-old Bertuzzi had 24 points in 48 games last season in Detroit. He is a nephew of former NHL player Todd Bertuzzi. The 24-year-old Frk had 25 points in 68 games with the Red Wings.
Detroit — Andreas Athanasiou remains a bit of a puzzle.
As the Red Wings settle into the off-season, one of the questions they'll face heading into the summer will be what to do with the talented, but frustrating, forward.
Few, if any, players on the Red Wings have Athanasiou's speed and skill combination.
But few, also, can become invisible for long stretches like Athanasiou.
John Niyo, Ted Kulfan and Gregg Krupa take a look at the future of the Red Wings after missing the playoffs for the second straight season.
Here are some of the highlights from the postseason edition of Red Wings Report.
► 2:45: GM Ken Holland on returning to the playoffs
Detroit – With two more goals from players they hope are future stars, the Red Wings defeated the Senators 2-0 in a matinee game at a two-thirds full Little Caesars Arena Saturday for a rare, third consecutive win.
Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou scored the goals for the Red Wings.
Jimmy Howard stopped 31 shots for a shutout and his 22nd win of the season.
Howard gets 1st shutout, Red Wings beat Senators 2-0
DETROIT (AP) — Out of the playoffs and sinking fast with one win in 14 games a week ago, the Detroit Red Wings could have embraced tanking to bolster their chances in the NHL draft lottery.
Instead, they launched a winning streak.
Jimmy Howard stopped 31 shots for his first shutout of the season as the Red Wings beat the Ottawa Senators 2-0 on Saturday for their third straight win.
Detroit — It wasn't as bad as it was 24 hours earlier when the Red Wings looked befuddled at times.
You had the sense it wasn't going to be that ugly again. Professionalism and pride were going to take over.
But these days, the Red Wings simply aren't playing winning hockey. Getting a consistent, winning effort for 60 minutes is a struggle.
And it didn't happen Friday, as the Red Wings extended their winless streak to six games, losing to Columbus 3-2.
Strong criticism hits home for Red Wings’ Anthony Mantha, Andreas Athanasiou
Columbus, Ohio – It's rare when Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg appears frustrated with his teammates, but he was after Thursday's 4-0 loss to Vegas.
Zetterberg said there was too much "poke-and-hope," meaning there were young players who needed to play defense honestly, rather than cheat for offensive opportunities.
Winnipeg, Manitoba – In Andreas Athanasiou's hopes and expectations, it was just one more progressive step in a career still very much in its infancy.
But it was good step. The third-year pro matched last year's point total (29) in 12 less games (52), and with his 13th goal in Wednesday's 2-1 loss in St. Louis.
He scored 18 last season, so Athanasiou is likely going to at least tie that mark this season.
But, in all, it was another example of Athanasiou, 23, making progress this season.
St. Louis — On the first night of life without Tomas Tatar, well, the Red Wings could have used his offensive ability.
Tatar obviously had the ability to score some goals and the Red Wings desperately needed that Wednesday in a 2-1 to the St. Louis Blues.
Goaltender Jimmy Howard was really good, stopping 24 shots and keeping the Red Wings close, but the lone goal was Andreas Athanasiou's 13th, at 18 minutes 15 seconds of the third.
St. Louis, Mo. — Tyler Bertuzzi is moving up.
Bertuzzi, who was playing on the fourth line and seeing minimal minutes in recent games, found himself on the second line at Wednesday's morning skate, playing alongside Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou.
Any young player wants a chance, and Bertuzzi has gotten one in this case.
"It's a huge part of my career, a big learning thing for me to be in a second-line spot," Bertuzzi said. "I'm just going to learn from it and play hard.
Daley scores on tip late in OT, Red Wings beat Rangers 3-2
NEW YORK (AP) — With time winding down in overtime, Trevor Daley knew he needed to get in position in front of the net.
Daley was in the right spot and tipped in Frans Nielsen's pass with 5.6 seconds showing on the clock to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the rebuilding New York Rangers on Sunday night.
Daley delivers: Defenseman’s OT goal lifts Red Wings
New York — Normally when Jimmy Howard and Henrik Lundqvist face each other in recent years, the games have turned into goaltending masterpieces.
Both usually bring out the best in each other, and especially at Madison Square Garden.
Goals tend to be hard to come by.
Sunday's game didn't match some of the recent spectacular outings — but the Red Wings will take it.
Trevor Daley scored with 5.6 seconds left in overtime, tipping Frans Nielsen's shot, giving the Red Wings a 3-2 victory.
Detroit — Andreas Athanasiou is getting another chance Thursday in Tampa, after a forgettable game against Anaheim on Tuesday.
Coach Jeff Blashill sat Athanasiou for much of the third period — Athanasiou only played one shift; 9 minutes, 38 seconds for the game — and the Red Wings protecting a one-goal lead. Blashill was direct about why Athanasiou watched rather than played.
Detroit — Red Wings fans are watching a lot of development on the roster this season.
The next few seasons likely hold similar promise as the franchise moves through a period of transition, and will eventually have to replace Henrik Zetterberg.
Some NHL players say the step up, most often from the American Hockey League but sometimes from playing in major juniors or the NCAA, is the biggest, toughest stage toward making a career in the best league in the world.
Red Wings beat Sharks 2-1 in shootout
DETROIT (AP) — Petr Mrazek capped an impressive January with another sharp performance.
Mrazek made 30 saves, and then stopped Tomas Hertl in the seventh round of a shootout to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday night. Mrazek went 3-1-1 in January with two shutouts and a .940 save percentage, easily his best month of the season.
Newark, N.J. — Terrific goaltending by Petr Mrazek, who looked consummately like his old self, and timely improvement to the penalty kill secured a Red Wings' win Monday against the vastly improved Devils, 3-0.
Mrazek made several great stops throughout the game, especially shorthanded.
His blazing lateral speed in the crease toed the line but did not exceed the limits of control. Quick, he remained in position almost without exception.
Detroit — Opponents have appeared to have caught on to what the Red Wings are doing on the power play.
So now it's the Red Wings' move to counter, and they began doing so during Friday's practice.
Coach Jeff Blashill tweaked both power play units, putting Andreas Athanasiou and Martin Frk with Henrik Zetterberg, Anthony Mantha and Niklas Kronwall — and inserting Tomas Tatar and Gustav Nyquist with Dylan Larkin, Tyler Bertuzzi and Mike Green.
Detroit — Tyler Bertuzzi is continuing to make quite an impression with the Red Wings.
The young forward had two more assists in Tuesday's 4-2 loss against Dallas but more than the offense, also showed the tenacity and hockey sense that could serve him well for many years.
Bertuzzi has eight points (one goal, seven assists) in his last nine games, and is looking more confident with every shift.
Detroit — Judging by social media, the meteor flying around the area Tuesday was a lot more exciting than the Red Wings.
There was little sort of excitement at Little Caesars Arena as the Dallas Stars defeated the Red Wings, 4-2.
The loss was the third in the last four games for the streaky Red Wings (18-19-7, 43 points), who had won four consecutive games before the losing began.
