PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jordan Eberle scored twice in the second period to help the New York Islanders pull away from the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 6-3 victory Tuesday night.
The Penguins held a ceremony before the game to honor the victims of Saturday's synagogue shooting in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Squirrel Hill. It included an 11-second moment of silence in memory of the 11 people slain.
Islanders score 4 goals in 3rd period, top Kings 7-2
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Valtteri Filppula isn't taking many shots, but the third-line center is making them count.
The New York Islanders decided to follow his lead, with Filppula scoring two goals on two shots to help his team snap a two-game road losing streak with a 7-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.
Filppula, Matt Martin, Leo Komarov and Andrew Ladd each had a goal in the third period as the Islanders set a season high in scoring.
OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — One day after being eliminated from playoff contention for the second straight year, the reeling New York Islanders were glad to get another win.
Andrew Ladd scored the tiebreaking goal late in the third period to lift the Islanders to a 4-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night.
Anders Lee, Anthony Beauvillier and Brock Nelson also scored to help New York get just its third win in 17 games (3-10-4). Jaroslav Halak stopped 33 shots.
Oshie scores 2 to help Capitals beat Islanders 7-3
NEW YORK (AP) — T.J. Oshie scored twice, Dmitry Orlov and Nicklas Backstrom each had a goal and two assists, and the first-place Washington Capitals beat the struggling New York Islanders 7-3 Thursday night.
Andrei Burakovsky added a goal and an assist, and Lars Eller and John Carlson also scored to help Washington improve to 10-4-3 in its last 17 games against the Islanders. Evgeny Kuznetsov had three assists and Philipp Grubauer finished with 35 saves for his 11th win of the season.
The New York Islanders recalled forward Tanner Fritz from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Sunday. Bridgeport, in turn, called up left winger Kellen Jones and defenseman Mike Cornell from Worcester (ECHL).
Fritz goes up for the second time this month. His 37 points with 10 goals made him Bridgeport's leading scorer and the AHL's fifth-leading scorer going into Sunday's games.
Barzal powers Islanders past Jets 5-2
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Islanders picked up a sorely needed win in their last game before the NHL's Christmas break.
Mathew Barzal led the way.
Barzal scored three times and Jaroslav Halak made 38 saves, helping the Islanders beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-2 on Saturday.
It was the first career hat trick for the 20-year-old Barzal, who has 12 goals and 23 assists in his rookie season. Jordan Eberle assisted on each of Barzal's goals, and Andrew Ladd helped on two of them.
Halak, Islanders end skid with win over Caps

NEW YORK (AP) — The St. Louis Blues are off to a fast start and they have goaltender Jake Allen and top scorer Vladimir Tarasenko to thank for that early success.
Allen made 40 saves on Monday and Tarasenko scored twice and again in the shootout to lift the Blues past the Islanders 3-2 for their third straight victory to start the season.
Brayden Schenn also scored in the shootout as the Blues managed to win after the Islanders tied it with two third-period goals.

The Arizona Coyotes rallied to force overtime, survived the 3-on-3 extra sesssion and got shootout goals from Anthony Duclair and Radim Vrbata in their 2-1 win over the New York Islanders, snapping a nine-game losing streak.

Winnipeg Jets name forward Blake Wheeler captain
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — The Winnipeg Jets named forward Blake Wheeler as their captain Wednesday.
Wheeler fills the void left when former captain Andrew Ladd who was dealt to Chicago in February.
The 6-foot-5 Wheeler has been with the Jets since the team relocated from Atlanta before the 2011-12 season. The former University of Minnesota player had his best offensive year last season, scoring 26 goals and adding 52 assists in 78 games.
