Giants finish 5-21 September for another losing season
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The way the last two seasons have gone for the San Francisco Giants, those three World Series titles in 2010, '12 and '14 seem so long ago for manager Bruce Bochy's club.
The Giants finished 73-89 following a season during which the biggest names — Madison Bumgarner, Buster Posey, Johnny Cueto, Brandon Belt — were all injured at some point. They traded Andrew McCutchen to the Yankees in late August amid all the disabled list stints.
Tanaka shines, Torres and McCutchen homer as Yanks blank M’s
SEATTLE (AP) — Masahiro Tanaka may be pitching himself into a start at the AL wild-card game.
The Japanese right-hander struck out 10 over eight innings, Gleyber Torres and Andrew McCutchen each hit two-run homers and the New York Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 4-0 on Friday night.
Tanaka (11-5) allowed three hits and didn't walk anyone, but he wasn't all that impressed.
Tanaka, Torres lead Yanks over Tigers 2-1; McCutchen hitless
NEW YORK (AP) — Gleyber Torres came through for the Yankees on a day they welcomed newcomers Andrew McCutchen and Adeiny Hechavarria to the Bronx and got slugging catcher Gary Sanchez back from the disabled list.
Torres hit a two-run homer and Masahiro Tanaka pitched seven strong innings for his first win since July, as New York beat the Detroit Tigers 2-1 Saturday.
Smooth fit: McCutchen moves right into Yankees’ lineup
NEW YORK (AP) — It took a while, but 9-month-old Steel McCutchen seemed fine with Dad's new look.
Andrew McCutchen liked his fit with the New York Yankees, too.
A day after being traded from San Francisco, the former NL MVP stepped back into a playoff race Saturday. He drew a warm ovation at Yankee Stadium when he was introduced as the leadoff hitter and right fielder, then struck out in his first two-bats against Detroit.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Chris Shaw is still looking for his first big league hit. However, he already has a game-deciding RBI to savor in his 24-hour-old MLB career.
Shaw and fellow Giants debutante Aramis Garcia drove in the game's first two runs, and rookie left-hander Andrew Suarez outdueled Zack Wheeler as San Francisco beat the New York Mets 7-0 on Friday night.
Donaldson, McCutchen, Madson move; busy Brewers make 3 deals
Andrew McCutchen is shaving his beard for a possible World Series run. Ryan Madson is switching bullpens, trying to help another team win a title. And Josh Donaldson is hoping he's healthy enough to contribute.
The Milwaukee Brewers? They were a busy bunch, swinging trades to get starter Gio Gonzalez, outfielder Curtis Granderson and reliever Xavier Cedeno.
Yankees rally after contested check swing, Boone ejection
NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees manager Aaron Boone ended his argument by squatting behind home and impersonating a catcher to show plate umpire Nic Lentz what he was missing.

Yankees get clean-cut McCutchen from Giants for playoff push
NEW YORK (AP) — With shoulder-length dreadlocks and a well-crafted beard, Andrew McCutchen spent his 20s forcing the baseball spotlight to shine bright on small-market Pittsburgh.
Now, a clean-cut McCutchen is coming cross-country to one of the sport's grandest stages.
"Just gonna take me a sec to get used to my freshly shaved face," he joked on Twitter.
LEADING OFF: Yanks eye ’Cutch, Bryant likely off DL for Cubs

Mets botch popup in 13th, Giants wind up with 2-1 win
NEW YORK (AP) — Mets left fielder Dominic Smith readily took the blame for plowing into shortstop Amed Rosario on the potential inning-ending play in the 13th inning that ended up costing his team the game.
Smith, a highly touted prospect who has been envisioned as the Mets' first-baseman of the future, was positioned in deep left field after a double-switch an inning earlier when San Francisco's Brandon Crawford lifted a lazy popup with runners on first and third and two outs.
Dozier ends Dodgers’ skid with RBI in 12th against Giants
LOS ANGELES (AP) — It was looking all too familiar to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Another lead lost, another reliever buckling in a big moment.
Only this time, after San Francisco Giants outfielder Andrew McCutchen hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to tie the game, the Dodgers did not wilt and their bullpen did not collapse.
Posey, McCutchen lead Giants past Pirates 13-10
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants finally got their offense going, and they needed it to survive another shaky performance from their bullpen.
Buster Posey got four hits, Andrew McCutchen homered against his former team and the San Francisco Giants defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 13-10 on Friday night.
"They just started swinging with I think more authority," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
The Giants had lost three in a row and Pittsburgh had won three straight.
Crawford, Rodriguez key Giants’ 3-2 win vs Padres in 10
SAN DIEGO (AP) — If he keeps pitching this well, Derek Rodriguez will be in the discussion for the NL Rookie of the Year Award.
"That would be one thing that my dad never got, so that would be nice," Rodridguez, the son of Hall of Famer Ivan Rodriguez, said after pitching seven strong innings in the San Francisco Giants' 3-2, 10-inning victory against the staggering San Diego Padres on Tuesday.
For Brian Dozier, getting traded meant a dash to the airport and a long trip to Dodger Stadium. For Jake Diekman, it was a lot easier — he simply rode the bullpen cart from one clubhouse to the other at Chase Field.
Chris Archer, Jonathan Schoop and a bunch of relievers moved on deadline day, a flurry of 15 swaps Tuesday before time ran out to make deals without waivers.
