WOLFSBURG, Germany (AP) — Wolfsburg has hired Martin Schmidt to coach the Bundesliga side as a swift replacement for Andries Jonker.
Jonker was fired on Monday after less than seven months in charge, with Saturday's 1-0 loss at Stuttgart leaving Wolfsburg with four points from its opening four league games of the new campaign.

BERLIN (AP) — United States defender John Anthony Brooks injured his thigh in his competitive debut for Wolfsburg and could miss the Bundesliga club's opener against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
Brooks went off in the 37th minute of Wolfsburg's 1-0 win over fourth-tier club Eintracht Norderstedt in the German Cup.
Wolfsburg coach Andries Jonker says "we don't have an exact diagnosis yet. ... For the Dortmund game there's still a question mark."
WOLFSBURG, Germany (AP) — Wolfsburg signed United States defender John Anthony Brooks for a reported fee of 20 million euros ($22.4 million) from Bundesliga rival Hertha Berlin on Wednesday, a record transfer for an American player.
The fee eclipses the reported $13 million paid by Premier League club Sunderland for striker Jozy Altidore in 2013 from AZ Alkmaar.
Wolfsburg, which only escaped relegation through a playoff, said Brooks would get a contract through 2022.

Wolfsburg facing 3 finals in bid to escape Bundesliga drop
BERLIN (AP) — Despite starting so well, Andries Jonker has only three games left to ensure 2009 Bundesliga champion Wolfsburg survives.

Gomez thought he'd capped a stunning turnaround when he completed his hat trick in a seven-minute span to continue his remarkable record of scoring in every game under Wolfsburg coach Andries Jonker. But Havertz salvaged a point for Leverkusen with a minute remaining.
