RIDGELAND, Miss. (AP) — The author of the young adult novel "The Hate U Give" says a remark by a Republican candidate in the Mississippi senate race reveals the state still has a long way to go when it comes to race issues.
Angie Thomas was voting in Tuesday's election.
She voted for Democrat Mike Espy, who's facing Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith.

WLBT-TV reports Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba presented Angie Thomas with a key to the city Tuesday.
Thomas's first book, "The Hate U Give," is a number one New York Times best-seller that is based on her life in her Georgetown neighborhood.
‘Hello, Universe’ wins Newbery for best children’s book
NEW YORK (AP) — Erin Entrada Kelly's "Hello, Universe," a nuanced account of a diverse group of middle school students and their unexpected encounters, has won the John Newbery Medal for the outstanding children's book of 2017. The Randolph Caldecott Medal for best illustration went to Matthew Cordell and his near-wordless story of a girl and the wolf pup she saves, "Wolf in the Snow."
Taye Diggs, Diane Guerrero among planned guests at BookCon
NEW YORK (AP) — Taye Diggs and Shane Evans will be among those on hand for next year's BookCon.
Diggs and Evans will be promoting their picture book "I Love You More" during the June 2-3 gathering at the Javits Center in Manhattan. Other guests include "Orange is the New Black" actress Diane Guerrero, whose book "My Family Divided" will tell of growing up as the child of undocumented immigrants, and popular young adult authors Angie Thomas and Jason Reynolds.
