Samoa rugby player dies of head injury
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A former Samoa under-20 rugby player has died of a head injury after a club match in Samoa.
Faiva Tagatauli, 27, died Thursday, four days after sustaining the injury while playing for the Vaimoso Rugby Club against Vailele at Tuana'imato near the Samoa capital Apia on Saturday.
HEIDELBERG, Germany (AP) — Samoa qualified for the 2019 Rugby World Cup after beating Germany 42-28 for a second time in their playoff on Saturday.
Samoa won the first leg 66-15 in Apia two weeks ago, making qualification on aggregate virtually inevitable.
Germany was competitive at home, leading by one point at halftime and by seven until the 69th minute when Samoa fullback Ah See Tuala crossed and converted for a 28-28 tie.
HEIDELBERG, Germany (AP) — Germany beat Portugal 16-13 on Saturday to advance in qualifying for the 2019 Rugby World Cup to a two-leg playoff with Samoa.
The Germans will play Samoa in Apia on June 30 and stage the return leg on July 14. The winner on aggregate will qualify directly into Pool A in Japan next year. The runner-up will go to the repechage tournament in November.
Magnitude 6 earthquake strikes off Samoa, American Samoa
HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude 6 earthquake struck waters west of Samoa and American Samoa. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The agency said Monday the earthquake was centered 220 miles west of Apia, Samoa, and 290 miles west of Pago Pago, American Samoa.
The quake struck at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers) shortly before 8 a.m. in American Samoa.
Mormon missionary serving in Samoa fatally struck by vehicle
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities say a Mormon missionary serving in Samoa is dead after being struck by a vehicle.
A spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Salt Lake City says 21-year-old Aaron Ahkau Matapa Patiole was walking with a companion in Upolu when he was fatally struck Sunday.
Patiole was a native of Australia and had been serving in the Samoa Apia Mission since last December 2016.
Tonga qualifies for 2019 RWC after Fiji beats Samoa
APIA, Samoa (AP) — Tonga qualified for the 2019 Rugby World Cup after Fiji beat Samoa 38-16 in the final match of the Pacific Nations Cup on Saturday.
Samoa needed at least a bonus point to take the second qualifying spot, but Fiji scored five tries one to retain the Pacific Nations Cup title and finish the two-year Oceania qualifying series unbeaten.

SYDNEY (AP) — Injured center Samu Kerevi and scrumhalf Nick Phipps have been ruled out of Australia's squad for rugby tests this month against Fiji, Scotland and Italy.
Kerevi injured his ankle in the Queensland Reds' loss to the Blues in Apia, Samoa on Friday and Phipps, a 52-cap veteran, also has an ankle injury.
APIA, Samoa (AP) — Replacement flyhalf Stephen Perofeta scored the winning try on debut to help the Blues beat the Queensland Reds 34-29 in the first Super Rugby match in Samoa on Friday.

CARDIFF, Wales (AP) — Centre Jamie Roberts will captain Wales for the first time when he leads them to the south Pacific for rugby tests against Tonga and Samoa next month.
