Former Case buildings help businesses salvage wood
RACINE, Wis. (AP) — When city officials decided to clear the area known as Machinery Row, or the Water Street Redevelopment Area, it was the end for those former industrial buildings.
But it was the beginning of a massive salvaging of materials from them: primarily lumber, Cream City bricks and metal. The lumber harvest will mean the wood used to construct those buildings will live on, as flooring, furniture, cabinetry and more.
Parents reflect on political activism’s impact on children
APPLETON, Wis. (AP) — Karen Park still remembers her parents' political influence growing up.
The daughter of two civil rights and peace activists who lived in Washington D.C. in the 1960s, Park was exposed to social movements and the political process early in life.
It impacted her so much that she's passed the same tradition down to her four children — two college students, one in middle school and one in high school.

Shopko announces closure of 6 more stores in Wisconsin
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Shopko has announced the closure of six more stores in Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin-based retailer announced late last year that it was closing 39 stores in 19 states by the end of February.

Appleton man gets 60 years for trafficking women, drugs
APPLETON, Wis. (AP) — An Appleton man convicted of trafficking women through brutal means has been sentenced to 60 years in prison.
Prosecutors say 39-year-old Willie Allison manipulated and controlled women by beating them, withholding food and controlling their access to drugs. Authorities say he also moved large amounts of heroin and cocaine from Milwaukee to the Appleton area, where he sold the drugs.

Appleton man charged with posing as doctor
APPLETON, Wis. (AP) — An Appleton man is charged with posing as a doctor.
Thirty-two-year-old Kyle Larsen was charged Wednesday with 18 counts, including theft, practicing medicine without a license and delivering a prescription drug.
According to the complaint, Larsen presented himself to patients as Dr. Kyle Ellis at his practice, Medical Psychology of Wisconsin LLC.
Wisconsin Guard soldiers given send-off for Afghanistan
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Family and friends have packed Lambeau Field Atrium to send off 400 Wisconsin National Guard soldiers deploying to Afghanistan.
Soldiers with the 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry head to Afghanistan this winter to help protect U.S. advisers for Afghan security forces. The Appleton-based unit includes companies from Green Bay, Fond du Lac, Clintonville, Marinette, Waupun and Ripon.
Appleton man arrested, accused of posing as a doctor
APPLETON, Wis. (AP) — An Appleton man is accused of posing as a doctor.
The 32-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after authorities executed a search warrant on a medical building in Appleton. Investigators say they found evidence of an illegal medical practice.
Send-off ceremony set for deploying Wisconsin Guard unit
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Family and friends will send off nearly 400 Wisconsin Army National Guard soldiers deploying to Afghanistan this winter.
Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and senior Guard leaders will be on hand for the private ceremonial send-off at Lambeau Field Atrium in Green Bay on Thursday.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Supporters of a $100 million incentive bill designed to keep open a Kimberly-Clark Corp. plant in northeastern Wisconsin argued Wednesday that taking no action would be devastating for the Appleton area and the entire state, though they remain short of the votes they need.

Kimberly-Clark tax break bill to get hearing, vote uncertain
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A $100 million tax break bill designed to keep paper products giant Kimberly-Clark Corp. from closing an Appleton-area plant will get a public hearing in the Legislature, but approval remains uncertain.
The Assembly passed the bill earlier this year but it stalled in the Senate. Without it, Kimberly-Clark has said it plans to close a Fox Crossing plant that employs about 500 people.

Wisconsin man gets 22 years for trying to induce miscarriage
APPLETON, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin man has been sentenced to 22 years in prison after being convicted of spiking his pregnant girlfriend's drink with an abortion-inducing drug.
Forty-five-year-old Manishkumar Patel was convicted in August of attempted first-degree intentional homicide of an unborn child. His girlfriend never drank the spiked beverage, but miscarried weeks later.
400 from Appleton guard unit deploying to Afghanistan
APPLETON, Wis. (AP) — Nearly 400 National Guard soldiers from an Appleton-based unit are being deployed to Afghanistan.
The 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry will be providing security for coalition forces operating in the region. They'll train, advise and assist Afghan security forces.
WLUK-TV reports the soldiers will leave sometime this winter. Besides its Appleton headquarters, the unit also has companies in Clintonville, Green Bay, Fond du Lac, Marinette, Ripon and Waupun.
Pamperin Park LARPers ‘really are a bunch of misfits’
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — On any other day at the park, one might expect to see flowers or hear the babbling of a creek.
But Saturdays at Pamperin Park are transformed into something different, with people in colorful garb wielding homemade, padded swords and shields and casting spells.
The group, known as Crimson Circle descends on the Howard park every Saturday for a session of what is commonly called live action role play — or, in its short form, "LARPing."
