Athletic Bilbao winless streak in Liga ends on late penalty
MADRID (AP) — Veteran striker Aritz Aduriz converted a penalty kick in stoppage time to end Athletic Bilbao's 13-game winless streak in the Spanish league on Monday.
Aduriz calmly converted his shot from the spot to give the hosts their first league win — 1-0 over Girona — since the first round in August.
Athletic seemed headed to another draw until Jonas Ramalho fouled Iker Muniain inside the area.
Iniesta, Morata and Carvajal to miss World Cup qualifiers
MADRID (AP) — Andres Iniesta, Alvaro Morata and Dani Carvajal will miss two World Cup qualifying matches because of injuries.
The trio will miss Spain's World Cup qualifiers against Albania on Friday and Israel on Oct. 9.
Spain coach Julen Lopetegui announced their replacements on Monday: Real Sociedad right back Alvaro Odriozola, Las Palmas attacking midfielder Jonathan Viera and Athletic Bilbao striker Aritz Aduriz.
Athletic Bilbao routs Las Palmas 5-1 in Spanish league
BILBAO, Spain (AP) — Athletic Bilbao routed Las Palmas 5-1 in the Spanish league on Friday to move into sixth place and control of a Europa League berth.
Iker Muniain and Aritz Aduriz scored twice each.
"We were ambitious. That's one of the marks of identity of this team," Muniain said.
Ronaldo turns playmaker to lead Madrid past Bilbao 2-1
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Cristiano Ronaldo turned into Real Madrid's playmaker by setting up two goals to beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1 on Saturday and keep on track to reclaim the Spanish league title.
Ronaldo passed for Karim Benzema to open the scoring at San Mames Stadium.
Bilbao equalized through Aritz Aduriz's header in the 65th, but three minutes later Ronaldo flicked on a corner kick for Casemiro to finish off.
9-man Athletic beats Barcelona 2-1 in Copa del Rey
BILBAO, Spain (AP) — Barcelona's two-year reign of the Copa del Rey was in jeopardy after it lost to a nine-man Athletic Bilbao 2-1 at a packed San Mames Stadium on Thursday.
Athletic played a man down from the 74th minute, and two men down from the 80th because of red cards in a drama-filled first-leg match in the round of 16.
