Sheriff J. Adam Shepherd said Monday that an Arizona Department of Public Safety unit that deals with explosives ordinance found the item was "rendered inert" and disposed of it.
A town resident spotted the object Sunday afternoon in a wooded area behind his home. He reported it as a suspicious item that could be a pipe bomb.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, 26-year-old Ismael Garfio had a blood-alcohol content of 0.168 percent at the time of Sunday's crash on the Loop 202 in Chandler.
That's twice the legal limit for drivers in Arizona.
Man killed when struck on highway by Arizona DPS vehicle
CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Department of Public Safety says a pedestrian was fatally injured Friday night when struck by a DPS vehicle as he walked in a traffic lane of State Route 387 in Casa Grande.
DPS spokesman Quentin Mehr identified the man killed as 39-year-old Jason E. Rangel of Casa Grande.
Mehr says it's not known why Rangel was walking in a traffic lane and the DPS investigation is ongoing.
California girl dies in fall from scenic Arizona overlook

Coconino County sheriff's officials said Wednesday that the body of the 14-year-old girl was found about 700 feet (213 meters) below Horseshoe Bend overlook.

Highway crash shuts down stretch of Interstate-10 in Arizona
ELOY, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities say a multi-vehicle crash has shut down Interstate-10 north of Tucson.
A spokesman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety says the crash happened Friday near Picacho Peak Road. Westbound and eastbound lanes are closed.
Bart Graves, the DPS spokesman, says the vehicles involved may have included two semi-trucks, a motorhome and other cars and vehicles.
Pack of dogs stop traffic on Phoenix freeway
PHOENIX (AP) — Authorities say a group of dogs narrowly avoided injury while roaming a Phoenix freeway during Monday morning traffic.
The Arizona Department of Transportation shared images on its Twitter account of six dogs walking in the southbound lanes of Interstate 17 near Grand Avenue around 9:45 a.m.

Arizona workers find woman who survived in desert for 6 days
PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona transportation worker Zach Moralez knew something wasn't right when he saw a damaged fence along a highway.
Tracks went off the edge of the road and through the fence on the edge of the hill. Moralez, a highway operations technician, knew there had to be a car at the bottom.
"We got down there as quick as we could, hollering out if anyone could hear us," Moralez told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "No response."

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said in a statement Thursday that the 83-year-old golf cart driver was confused after he was stopped at about 5:30 a.m. and told troopers he thought he was leaving a meeting.
No one was hurt. Troopers took the man home and released him to the custody of his wife.
