Barty led the deciding set 3-0 before Kvitova began a comeback to win her 26th WTA title.
Barty beat No. 1 Simona Halep, No.9 Kiki Bertens and No.12 Elise Mertens on her way to the final.
Kvitova apologized to Barty and the crowd for spoiling the Australian's Sydney party.
Ashleigh Barty into Sydney International singles final
SYDNEY (AP) — Ashleigh Barty continued her strong run at the Sydney International with a semifinal win over Kiki Bertens, beating the Dutch player 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-5 Friday.
Barty withstood 15 aces from Bertens in the 2-hour, 18-minute match to advance to her second consecutive final in Sydney.
She will play two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, who beat Serbian qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-1, 6-2.
Sasnovich, Barty through to Sydney International semifinals
SYDNEY (AP) — Aliaksandra Sasnovich advanced to the Sydney International semifinals by beating Timea Bacsinszky 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday.
The 33rd-ranked Sasnovich reached the quarterfinals last week in Brisbane.
Sasnovich will next face two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, who beat 2016 Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-1 in a match twice suspended by rain.
Barty beats No. 1 Simona Halep in Romanian’s tour return
SYDNEY (AP) — Ashleigh Barty broke Simona Halep's serve in the final game to beat the No. 1-ranked Halep 6-4, 6-4 in a second-round match Wednesday at the Sydney International.
It was Halep's first match since October after a lengthy layoff due to a herniated disc in her back. Halep won last year's French Open and lost to Caroline Wozniacki in the Australian Open final.

Ashleigh Barty, Wang Qiang in WTA Elite Trophy final
ZHUHAI, China (AP) — Ashleigh Barty rallied from a set down to beat defending champion Julia Goerges 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals of the WTA Elite Trophy on Saturday.
The Australian faces Wang Qiang, who beat Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 6-0, in Sunday's final.
Barty served one more ace than her opponent — 8-7 — but also had six double faults, compared to just two for Goerges.
Barty won her only previous match against Wang in Strasbourg earlier this year.
Garbine Muguruza reaches semifinals at WTA Elite Trophy
ZHUHAI, China (AP) — Garbine Muguruza saved three match points before beating Anastasija Sevastova 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-6 (1) and advancing to the semifinals of the WTA Elite Trophy on Friday.
The Spaniard, a two-time Grand Slam champion, also saved eight of 12 break points against her second-seeded opponent.
"These matches are the ones that really count," Muguruza said. "It's long, it's difficult, you have match points against you, you don't lose your courage, you don't lose your enthusiasm."
Roger Federer, Serena Williams set for Hopman Cup team event
PERTH, Australia (AP) — Serena Williams and Roger Federer have committed to play the Hopman Cup mixed teams event in late December while former Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber and Alexander Zverev will represent Germany.
Frances Tiafoe will be Williams' partner for the United States, while Belinda Bencic will again represent Switzerland with Federer to defend the title they won in January over Kerber and Zverev in the final.
Sabalenka to face Kontaveit in Wuhan Open final

TOKYO (AP) — Fifth-seeded Sloane Stephens was eliminated from the first round of the Pan Pacific Open by Donna Vekic 6-4, 6-4 Tuesday.
The 2017 U.S. Open champion also lost to the unseeded Croat in the first round at Wimbledon.

NEW YORK (AP) — Ashleigh Barty and CoCo Vandeweghe dropped a set and still raised a trophy.
Even with a pursuit of U.S Open perfection over early, Barty and Vandeweghe rallied to win the women's doubles final Sunday, beating Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
"We've done everything kind of the way that we've wanted to," Barty said. "Now we get the reward."
Mike Bryan, minus Bob, moves into another Grand Slam final
NEW YORK (AP) — Mike Bryan continues to excel at the U.S. Open, even without his twin brother and longtime doubles partner, Bob.
Bryan and Jack Sock, who stepped in earlier this year when Bob went down with a hip injury, moved into the men's doubles final with a 6-2, 6-7 (1), 6-4 win over the Colombian team of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah on Thursday.

MONTREAL (AP) — U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens romped into the Rogers Cup semifinals Friday, beating Anastasija Sevastova 6-2, 6-2.
The 25-year-old Stephens, ranked No. 3 in the world, won a hard-court title in Miami in March and lost the French Open final to top-ranked Simona Halep. In the semifinals, the American will face fifth-seeded defending champion Elina Svitolina.

MONTREAL (AP) — Alize Cornet of France defeated listless-looking Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-1 in the second round of the Rogers Cup on Wednesday.
