The 27-year-old man appeared Thursday in Auckland's High Court. His lawyer argued his name should continue to be kept secret so he can get a fair trial, according to Radio New Zealand. A judge said he would announce a decision later.

Defending champion withdraws from men’s ASB Classic
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — Defending champion Roberta Bautista Agut has joined fellow Doha finalist Tomas Berdych in withdrawing from the Auckland ATP Tour event which starts Monday.
Bautista Agut was to be the fifth seed at the Auckland tournament, the ASB Classic, but pulled out after reaching the Doha final in which he beat Berdych 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
His appearance in the final meant there was insufficient time to travel to Auckland for his first-round match.

The man was surfing at 6 p.m. at Baylys Beach about 100 kilometers (60 miles) northwest of Auckland when the attack happened, according to police.
The man, who is in his 20s, was in pain and bleeding after being bitten on his hand, elbow and mouth, according to the New Zealand Herald website, but was able to walk and talk.
