Red Bulls help surprise high school player with scholarship

High school junior and soccer player Giovanni Calderon thought he was just going to an interview for a scholarship application. Instead he got a visit from New York Red Bulls defender Aurelien Collin.

Collin presented Calderon with a $5,000 college scholarship, tickets to the second leg of the Red Bulls' Eastern Conference final against Atlanta United on Thursday and a trip to the MLS Cup.

"This is crazy," said Calderon, a center back. "It is just so overwhelming."

New York Red Bulls re-sign defender Aurelien Collin

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) — The New York Red Bulls have re-signed center back Aurelien Collin.

The Major League Soccer club made the announcement Wednesday without releasing contract details.

Collin's contract expired after the season. He was acquired in a trade with Orlando City SC in April. The 30-year-old Collin made 23 appearances and had two assists last season.

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) — Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his 22nd and 23rd goals of the season to break a tie for the Golden Boot lead and the New York Red Bulls beat the Columbus Crew 3-2 on Sunday.

New York (15-9-9) secured a bye in the knockout round after Toronto FC tied Montreal 2-2. Columbus (8-13-12) was eliminated from playoff contention Thursday.
