Voters across the Houston region Tuesday backed a new jail in Waller County, and were asked to improve roads and drainage in Galveston County and overturn a Prohibition-era law that banned liquor sales in a section of Montgomery County. A number of city council members and school board trustees were also on the ballot in area cities.
Here's what early returns showed in elections around the region:
Houston-area voters on Tuesday will decide seven state propositions, city council races in Baytown, Bellaire and Missouri City, as well as billions in city and school bonds and trustee races for school districts and community colleges.
Election Day voters must report to their precinct's designated polling place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and should verify that location at www.harrisvotes.com, particularly because three dozen sites typically used for voting were sidelined by Hurricane Harvey.

It's bad enough that Hurricane Harvey and its unprecedented rainfall amounts has greatly affected the high school football scene, but when the storm starts messing with the pint-size football players, that's way out of bounds.
For the second consecutive weekend last Saturday, Harvey and the massive clean-up that has followed has put a major dent in the Texas Intercity Football, Inc. (TIFI) schedule.
For the more than 3,000 passengers aboard the Carnival Breeze, an extra week at sea due to Harvey's wrath ended on a steamy Saturday morning in Galveston.
The Breeze was the last of four ships to dock in the Port of Galveston's cruise terminal after being turned away Aug. 25 as Harvey strengthened from a tropical storm to a hurricane - leaving upward of 20,000 vacationers stranded at sea. The cruise was originally supposed to end Aug.??27 and was given clearance to dock early Saturday.

AP Exclusive: Flood insurance policies plunged before Harvey
WASHINGTON (AP) — Houston's population is growing quickly, but when Harvey hit last weekend there were far fewer homes and other properties in the area with flood insurance than just five years ago, according to an Associated Press investigation.
The sharp, 9 percent drop in coverage means many residents fleeing Harvey's floodwaters have no financial backup to fix up their homes and will have to draw on savings or go into debt — or perhaps be forced to sell.
Hurricane Harvey's winds and floodwaters have created emergencies at chemical facilities across the Houston area, from an Exxon Mobil roof collapse at its massive Baytown complex to the risk of an explosion at a chemical plant northeast of Houston.
