Alabama notebook: Tied with six titles, Saban has healthy respect for Bryant; ESPN releases TV ratings
Who’s No. 1, Nick Saban or Bear Bryant?
They’re tied with the most major college football national championships with six. Bryant won all six of his at Alabama during 1961-79. Saban won one at LSU in 2003 with the remaining five coming at Alabama in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015 and Monday night when the Tide beat Georgia 26-23 in the national title game.
On Tuesday morning at a news conference in Atlanta, Saban wasn’t afraid to wade into the discussion.

Dooley knows Smart’s challenge; ex-UGa coach beat Bear, Bama
ATLANTA (AP) — Before there was Kirby Smart vs. Nick Saban, another young second-year Georgia coach took on an Alabama coaching giant.
Vince Dooley was only 33 and trying to establish his program at Georgia when the Bulldogs opened the 1965 season with an 18-17 win over mighty Bear Bryant and the Crimson Tide.
The following spring, Dooley and his wife Barbara encountered the indomitable Bryant at the Southeastern Conference's annual meeting in Destin, Florida.
In a series that began in 1899, the Tigers lead 32-20-3, 5-0 since the Aggies joined the SEC in 2012. LSU holds a 24-10-1 lead in games played in Baton Rouge. Here's a look back at five memorable games from this ancient series:
Sapakoff: Why Dabo is worth two million BBQ meals and almost as much as Drew Smyly
Pity the poor sap that replaces Dabo Swinney, likely to be the hardest person to follow in the history of Palmetto State college athletics. He is the only active major college football coach to win a national championship and take his school’s brand beyond precedent.
Alabama had Bear Bryant, Florida State had Bobby Bowden, Ohio State had Woody Hayes.

LORAN SMITH COLUMN: Cotton Bowl games of the past featured the best of the best
Fifty years ago, at December’s end, Georgia played in the Cotton Bowl for the first time — competing against the winner of the old Southwest Conference Championship, Southern Methodist University.
More than a few football fans in the Lone Star state, with enduring passion for the SWC and the Cotton Bowl, remember those good ’ol days with the deepest of sentiment and now, after falling from grace, glory in the latent lift the game has gotten from Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys.

Crimson & Black: A defense running on all cylinders
The phrase “defense wins championships” comes from the legendary college coach Bear Bryant when he said, “Offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships.”
The Central Washington University football team will have to wait until next season for the chance to win a championship, but its defense is certainly leading them in the right direction.
The Wildcats are ranked among the nation’s top 10 in tackles for loss, red zone defense and rushing defense.
Offense is always considered to be the flashy side of football.
Whether it is the quarterback throwing a Hail Mary, a running back dodging tackles or even a kicker nailing a 50-plus yard field goal, it gets all the glory.
But whatever happened to the term, “defense wins championships”?
Legendary Alabama football coach Bear Bryant coined the phrase and many teams follow it.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Bobby Bowden never thought he'd see the day when someone would challenge Bear Bryant as Alabama's greatest coach.
