KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — A beauty pageant in Uganda that purports to promote local women's "curves" has outraged critics who say it demeans the dignity of women.
The pageant, dubbed "Miss Curvy Uganda," is being championed by a government minister who says the East African country should not promote only "animals" in the safari parks.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Court documents show the New Mexico Attorney General's Office has raided the home of the New Mexico beauty pageant's former executive director.
KOB-TV reports that investigators this month searched Greg Smith's home in Elida where authorities say they seized pageant documents, two computers, a digital camera and cellphone.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte delivered a speech without sex jokes and expletives Monday, telling a gathering of Miss Universe contestants that he was told to be careful with his language.
Duterte told pageant contestants at the Malacanang presidential palace he had never been in a "roomful of beautiful women," adding "I hope that this day will never end."
Eighty-six women will vie for the Miss Universe crown on Jan. 30 in Manila.
Growing up, Vanessa Matheson would spend her free time outdoors, hiking, camping and fishing. She was far from the stereotypical “girly girl” and had no desire to wear dresses or experiment with make-up.
