US guards against overconfidence in World Cup qualifying
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Defender Becky Sauerbrunn said the memories of 2010 still drive her as the U.S. women's national team seeks to qualify for next year's World Cup in France.
The United States lost in the semifinals of that year's CONCACAF qualifying tournament, sending the team to a third-place finish and a two-legged playoff against Italy to secure a spot in the 2011 World Cup in Germany.
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Amy Rodriguez and Becky Sauerbrunn arrived in Kansas City this week with their focus somewhat split.
The veterans of the U.S. women's national team understand the importance of the four-team Tournament of Nations, which begins with a match against Japan on Thursday night. And they surely remember losing to Australia in the event last year — the last time the squad was defeated in any competition.
To hear Becky Sauerbrunn reference the "twilight" of her career is a bit unsettling. It's abundantly clear from watching the 32-year-old defender on the field that she's still at her peak.
But Sauerbrunn is thinking about a legacy as the U.S. national team readies for World Cup qualifying this fall. If the defending champions make the field for women's soccer's premier event in France next year, it will be her third World Cup.
U.S. women’s soccer team set for key tournament to shape World Cup lineup
This week the U.S. womens national team takes on Germany, France and England in the SheBelieves Cup, a yearly tournament that includes four of the worlds best teams. After the mens abject failure to qualify for the World Cup, the women are on guard against a failure of their own. This tournament will be key in establishing the team that will go into World Cup qualifying this fall. The U.S. is still the top-ranked team in the world, but head coach Jill Ellis still has some question marks to address, especially on defense.
Brian, Sauerbrunn to miss training camp due to injuries
CHICAGO (AP) — Midfielder Morgan Brian and defender Becky Sauerbrunn will miss the U.S. women's soccer training camp ahead of a Jan. 21 exhibition against Denmark at San Diego.
Brian will remain with Lyon in France following nagging injuries, the U.S. Soccer Federation said Thursday. Sauerbrunn has a stress reaction in her left foot that necessitates several weeks of rest.
Twenty-four players are attending the training camp in the Los Angeles area.
CHICAGO (AP) — Defender Ali Krieger, who is nearing her 100th international appearance, has been named to the U.S. women's national team roster for the upcoming Tournament of Nations.
Krieger, who plays for the Orlando Pride of the National Women's Soccer League, was not on the roster for a pair of games in Europe last month. She has 98 national team appearances.
US women’s soccer team, federation hope for new CBA by April
An emphasis on player-driven leadership has brought encouraging signs in talks for a labor contract between the women's national team and the U.S. Soccer Federation, according to defender Becky Sauerbrunn.
The 2015 Women's World Cup champions have been without a deal since Dec. 31. Talks were stalled when the players parted ways in late December with attorney Rich Nichols, who had been executive director of the U.S. Women's National Team Player Association since late 2014.
Carli Lloyd: Women feel like ‘second-class citizens’
Soccer star Carli Lloyd isn’t mincing words when it comes to the fight for equal pay.
Lloyd, alongside fellow United States Women’s National Team players Morgan Brian, Becky Sauerbrunn and Christen Press, will appear on ’60 Minutes’ Sunday night on CBS to discuss why it's a problem that they aren’t paid as much as their male counterparts.
