28-year-old Janesville man fatally shot in Beloit
BELOIT, Wis. (AP) — The Rock County medical examiner has identified a man who was fatally shot in Beloit.
Twenty-eight-year-old James Tomten, of Janesville, died at the scene of the shooting on Saturday afternoon.
Beloit police say Tomten and his assailant apparently were acquainted. They do not believe there's an ongoing threat to the public. No one is in custody for the homicide.

BELOIT, Wis. (AP) _ Regal Beloit Corp. (RBC) on Monday reported fourth-quarter net income of $55.6 million.
The Beloit, Wisconsin-based company said it had net income of $1.28 per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were $1.41 per share.
The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.31 per share.
Illinois door manufacturer relocates to Wisconsin
BELOIT, Wis. (AP) — A door manufacturer based in Illinois is relocating its operations to southern Wisconsin.
Seal-Rite Door says it will open a new $16 million facility in Beloit that will employ about 80 people. The company is a subsidiary of Palmer-Donavin Manufacturing Co.
The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation is providing Seal-Rite with up to $250,000 in state tax credits over the next three years.
Man shot and killed in Beloit; suspect in custody
BELOIT, Wis. (AP) — The Rock County Medical Examiner's Office has identified a man shot and killed in Beloit.
Authorities say 49-year-old Jose Reyes was shot several times inside a home about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday. He died later at a hospital.
Police have arrested a 20-year-old Beloit man and say they are not looking for any more suspects.
Comfort dog helps Wisconsin students read
BELOIT, Wis. (AP) — Beloit Memorial High School students have been reading up a storm thanks to Mary the comfort dog.
Mary, a golden retriever from the K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry offered through St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Janesville, visits special education teacher Beth Cox's classroom twice a month.
Last year, student Mauricio Ramos proposed the idea of having students read to a dog.

Wisconsin museum with large angel collection is closing
BELOIT, Wis. (AP) — A museum in Wisconsin that contains the world's largest collection of angels is closing.
Joyce Berg, who launched The Angel Museum 20 years ago with her personal collection, says it's shutting down due to a lack of funds, membership, corporate sponsors and volunteers.
Berg and her late husband, Lowell, started collecting in 1976 and she holds the record for the most angels, at 13,165. The museum contains 600 African-American angels donated by Oprah Winfrey.
Local Janesville program houses homeless vets
JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) — Tom Kimball served four years of active duty starting in 1954 and four years in the reserves as a Navy corpsman.
Today, the 83-year-old lives in a dormitory setting at a former nursing home between Janesville and Beloit in the Housing 4 Our Vets program.
Kimball would not discuss how he became homeless about five years ago. He's in the facility now for the second time but feels comfortable about his plans to move to Wausau and take care of himself.
Wisconsin collector sells angel figurines as museum closes
BELOIT, Wis. (AP) — The pain on 87-year-old Joyce Berg's face is visible when she talks about losing most of her angel family.
"I have to part with them," she laments, letting out a sigh and glancing at dozens of haloed and winged figurines in a display case.
The figurines include some of the dearest in her angel collection, which numbers at least 14,000.
3 hurt in small plane crash near Beloit Airport
BELOIT, Wis. (AP) — Authorities say three people were hurt when a small plane crashed into a cornfield after taking off from the Beloit Airport in southern Wisconsin.
Winnebago County, Illinois, Deputy Chief Dominick Barcellona says the crash happened shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday. Barcellona tells WREX the plane apparently had an issue immediately after takeoff.

Makholm, who moved to Beloit Senior Living a year ago from Suring, Wisconsin, lives independently in her on-site apartment, is on the go and is in almost perfect health.
She attends exercise class and book club, does crafts and stops in at happy hour. She enjoys an occasional nip of gin.

DOJ sex assault kit tests yield more charges
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state Department of Justice's push to analyze untested sexual assault evidence kits has yielded its third set of criminal charges.
The agency Thursday charged Jason Smith with sexual assault of a child while armed. According to a criminal complaint, Smith encountered a 13-year-old girl on the street in Beloit in 2000, displayed a revolver and sexually assaulted her.
BELOIT, Wis. (AP) — Blindness isn't a barrier to achievement.
That's a message school counselor Chelsea Dallin conveys to her students at her alma mater, the Wisconsin Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Janesville.
As someone who is only able to see a little light and is otherwise blind, Dallin wants to serve as an inspiration and mentor for students.
TOWN OF BELOIT, Wis. (AP) — Police are investigating a suspicious death in southern Wisconsin.
Police say a man's body was found behind an elementary school in the Town of Beloit Saturday morning. Officers believe the man died elsewhere, and his body was placed on school grounds.
WISC-TV reports officers responded around 9:30 a.m. and found the body. The man is estimated to be around 30 years old.

Beloit couple charged after 8 children found malnourished, battered
BELOIT — One young child was so thin that his grandmother, who hadn’t seen him in months, didn’t recognize him.
Other children in the same filthy house showed signs of malnourishment as well as bites and bruises, apparently from the assaults of older children.

Four men were arrested in Beloit Tuesday on charges they allegedly sold heroin and cocaine in the area.
Law enforcement agents served two search warrants in Beloit and South Beloit, Ill., finding about 115 grams of heroin, 40 grams of cocaine, $5,300 in cash and three handguns.
A 73-year-old Beloit man was killed Sunday evening when his pickup truck left the highway and overturned in a ditch.
The crash happened at about 7:10 p.m. on Highway 81 east of South Smythe School Road, the Rock County Sheriff's Office said.
BELOIT, Wis. (AP) — It's been 29 years since Elaine Hilmer first started to lend her creativity and talent for sewing to Kids Fun and Drama (KFAD).
The youth theater troupe, then still in its infancy, really needed a costume designer. After answering the call for help, Hilmer was hooked.
"I've been sewing since I was around 10 years old because my mom and aunt were both sewers," Hilmer said. "I started by making Barbie clothes."

Beloit Turner school referendum fails by two votes; recount could be next
A school referendum in Rock County that failed by two votes is likely headed to a recount.
Two men have been arrested in Beloit for allegedly dealing heroin and cocaine.
Markis Crenshaw, 30, and Deon Young, 42, were arrested and booked into the Rock County Jail, Beloit police said.
Crenshaw was arrested Friday following a search of a residence in the 1900 block of Saint Lawrence Avenue.

A man is in critical condition after being shot Sunday afternoon in Beloit.
Police said the shooting happened at about 5 p.m. in the 900 block of Tenth Street.
Two suspects, black males in their late 20s, were seen going east from the shooting site.
Beloit police are looking for a man who opened an unlocked door at a local hotel and stole items from the room while the guest was sleeping.
The burglary happened early Sunday morning at the Rodeway Inn, 2956 Milwaukee Road, Beloit police said.
Two people were injured, one critically, early Saturday morning in a rollover crash in Beloit.
The crash happened at about 1:40 a.m. on Willowbrook Road north of State Line Road, Beloit police said.
