How did TBS do in its Villanova-Michigan game coverage?
CLEVELAND, Ohio – We look at TBS' coverage of the NCAA National Basketball championship between the Villanova Wildcats and Michigan Wolverines Monday night from San Antonio.
Jim Nantz (play by play), Grant Hill (analyst), Bill Raftery (analyst) and Tracy Wolfson (sideline reporter). Pregame-halftime-postgame analysts: Greg Gumbel, Ernie Johnson, Seth Davis, Clark Kellogg, Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — When he wasn't dribbling behind his back, winking to the TV announcers, stuffing shots or dishing out assists, Villanova guard Donte DiVincenzo was making it rain.
Later on, confetti.
The redhead kid with the nickname Big Ragu came off the bench to make five 3s and score 31 points Monday to lift 'Nova to another blowout victory in the NCAA Tournament — this time 79-62 over Michigan for its second national title in three seasons.
Moritz Wagner had Loyola-Chicago seeing stars.
And Michigan's star big man had Bill Raftery, well, not seeing at all.
Late in the 69-57 victory in the Final Four on Saturday night, Wagner went chasing a loose ball – and ended up barreling right into the broadcast table where Raftery, Grant Hill and Jim Nantz were ducking for cover.
While major disaster was averted, Raftery's glasses were a casualty.
NEW YORK (AP) — Veteran play-by-play announcer Verne Lundquist will not be calling NCAA Tournament basketball games this year.
CBS and Turner Sports announced the commentator teams Monday for the men's basketball tournament, which starts next week. Jim Nantz, Bill Raftery and Grant Hill will continue to announce the Final Four and championship game. Those games, along with the tournament selection show on Sunday, will be televised on TBS.
NCAA title game top scorer Booth returns healthy for Nova
VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) — Phil Booth can live with hitting only Villanova's second-biggest buzzer beater in a national championship game.
Let's throw it back to April 2016 in Houston.
"Five seconds to go in the half. Booth. He has time. Looks up, puts it up. And got it!" TBS announcer Jim Nantz said.
"Big time dagger. Booth!" analyst Bill Raftery said.
Just like that, Booth's jumper at the horn cut North Carolina's lead to 5 at halftime.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Courts around the country tried to ease the burden of fines and fees in the wake of riots in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014 that brought attention to a torrent of traffic and other minor citations that saddled people with debt and even sent them to jail.
McKillop, Raftery, Burke to get Lapchick Award
NEW YORK (AP) — Bob McKillop, about to start his 29th season as coach at Davidson, and TV analysts Bill Raftery and Doris Burke have been chosen for the 2017 Lapchick Character Award.
The three will be honored on Oct. 6 at a luncheon in New York to celebrate the life of Joe Lapchick, a Hall of Fame coach with St. John's and the New York Knicks, who was known for his compassion and integrity off the court.
Outrage over low bail
When I read the article on Immigration and Customs Enforcement seeking the former Uber driver who is a rape suspect I was totally outraged (“ICE seeks Uber rape suspect,” April 27). I have a daughter who currently attends Boston College and uses Uber regularly. So I was aware of the incident.
But I was shocked to read that the driver was an illegal immigrant who had been deported previously. Nonetheless, he was only given a $2,500 bail that was easily posted.
