BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A plan to honor a former Alabama mayor who went to prison for bribery is sparking disagreement in Birmingham.
Birmingham's current mayor, Randall Woodfin, has proposed renaming a city recreational facility for Larry Langford, an ex-mayor convicted in a bribery scheme a decade ago.
Langford died in January after being released from federal prison because of poor health. Woodfin told the City Council recently that Langford made contributions and deserves to be honored.
City seeks to maintain Confederate monument ruling

Jeremy Elwin Owens, 31, rode in a wheelchair as he left the treatment center to face charges in the killing of Birmingham police Sgt. Wytasha Carter.
Speaking at a news conference, Police Chief Patrick Smith said Owens was arrested using Carter's handcuffs.

2 dead, 1 hurt in shooting near Alabama recreation center
TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (AP) — Two people have died and a third person was hurt in a shooting near a recreation center in northern Alabama.
News outlets reported the shooting happened Wednesday afternoon in Tuscumbia.
Police Chief Tony Logan said the shooting was originally reported as a wreck. Officers found a man shot inside a car. The man was taken to a hospital in Tupelo, Mississippi, where he died.
