Michael Annett wins Xfinity Series opener at Daytona
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Michael Annett stretched the Speedweeks streak of first-time winners to three with a victory Saturday in the Xfinity Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway.
Annett won for the first time at NASCAR's national level, a career that spans 345 races in three series. He gave JR Motorsports, owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr., his sister and sister and Rick Hendrick, its fourth in five years at Daytona
Southern Miss becomes bowl eligible after 39-7 win at UTEP
EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Rachuan Mitchell picked off a Brandon Jones pass and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown to spark Southern Mississippi to a 39-7 win over UTEP Saturday that earned the Golden Eagles bowl eligibility for the fourth straight season and 22nd time in the last 25 years.
The Golden Eagles finished the regular season with back-to-back wins of the first time this season, knocking off Louisiana Tech, 21-20 in their home finale last week.
Western Kentucky picks off 5 UTEP passes in 40-16 rout
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) — Steven Duncan threw for two touchdowns and D'Andre Ferby ran for two more as Western Kentucky turned five first-half interceptions into a 40-0 lead and coasted past UTEP, 40-16 on Saturday night.
The Hilltoppers picked up their first Conference USA victory this season. They play at Louisiana Tech in the season finale Saturday.

Louisiana Tech holds on to give UTEP its 19th straight loss
RUSTON, La. (AP) — J'Mar Smith broke off a 43-yard touchdown sprint to give Louisiana Tech a late lead and the Bulldogs held off UTEP 31-24 on Saturday afternoon.
UTEP, which has lost 19 straight games, was close to victory for a second week in a row after the Miners lost to North Texas 27-24 last week.
Rookie Austin Cindric wins pole for Xfinity race at Mid-Ohio
LEXINGTON, Ohio (AP) — Austin Cindric has won the pole for the NASCAR Xfinity Series Rock N Roll Tequila 70 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
The 19-year-old rookie on Saturday had a top lap of 96.386 mph around the 2.3-mile, 13-turn road course in his Ford for Team Penske. This was the second time he has won a pole.
The 75-lap race later in the day covers more than 169 miles.
JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — Once Kyle Larson got to the top of the track, it was all over.
Larson used the high line Saturday at Chicagoland Speedway to pass Kevin Harvick and drive away to a dominant victory in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.
"You can look at any track where you can run inches off the wall and I'll be faster than anybody," he said. "Once the lap times dropped off enough around the bottom I could move up there and go really fast."

Bell overcame an early spin to take the lead by the midpoint and held off Brandon Jones to win the rain-delayed Camping World Series NASCAR Truck race early Friday at Kentucky Speedway.
NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — John Hunter Nemechek raced to his second straight NASCAR Camping World Truck victory, taking the lead with his six laps left Friday night at Iowa Speedway.
Nemechek took four new tires during the final caution. The gamble paid off, as he passed leader Johnny Sauter soon after a restart.
The 20-year-old Nemechek raced to his fifth career victory, driving the No. 8 Chevrolet for his father, former NASCAR Cup driver Joe Nemechek. He won last week at Gateway in Madison, Illinois.
BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — Brandon Jones won at Michigan for a second consecutive year, racing to his fourth career ARCA victory Friday.
Jones, who races full time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, finished nearly 21 seconds ahead of second-place Austin Theriault in the 100-lap, 200-mile race. Jones was making his second ARCA start of the year. He finished second last weekend at Pocono.
Theriault, the ARCA points leader, has six top-five finishes in eight races this season.

Man accused of fatally running down 2 teenage pedestrians
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A driver has been accused of running down two teenagers as they were walking back from getting drinks for a sleepover party in Jackson.
The Clarion-Ledger (http://on.thec-l.com/2aZEuFH) reports 50-year-old William Gilbert turned himself in on Saturday, several hours after the incident. On Tuesday, he was charged with two counts of culpable negligent homicide. He has also been charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident.
