Chiefs atop AFC playoff puzzle for 1st time since 1997
For the first time in a decade, the top seed in the AFC playoffs goes to a team not led by Tom Brady or Peyton Manning.
The Kansas City Chiefs earned the No. 1 seed for the first time since 1997 after switching from Alex Smith to Patrick Mahomes , the sensational second-year star who reminds so many of Brett Favre.
High-flying Chiefs, Ravens stingy defense ready for showdown
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Andy Reid has always been considered an offensive-minded head coach, whether it's because he played along the offensive line in college or tutored the likes of Brett Favre once he reached the NFL.
So his response wasn't all that surprising this week when the Chiefs coach was asked who generally comes out on top when an potent offense goes up against a shutdown defense.
"This thing is based on a point system," Reid said with a wry grin. "Pretty simple there."
Belichick wins 250th with Pats in 24-10 victory over Vikes
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The Patriots have thrived in the final month of the season since Bill Belichick and Tom Brady's arrival.
They're hoping their 24-10 victory over the Vikings is the start of another memorable December.
Tom Brady passed for 311 yards and a touchdown, Bill Belichick earned his 250th victory, including playoffs, as Patriots coach in Sunday's victory over Minnesota.
Including his 37 regular-season and postseason wins with the Browns, Belichick has 287 wins overall.
Mullens has sterling debut in 49ers 34-3 win over Raiders
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Nick Mullens got several hundred congratulatory text messages, a phone call from Brett Favre and his Twitter account verified.
Delivering the most productive game by a quarterback in his NFL debut since the merger leads to many accolades.
Mullens threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns and the San Francisco 49ers thoroughly dominated the Battle of the Bay, beating the Oakland Raiders 34-3 on Thursday night.
Brees makes exclusive 500 club, beats Ravens for first time
BALTIMORE (AP) — So, Drew Brees finally beat the Baltimore Ravens. Years from now, the remarkable New Orleans quarterback will hopefully recall the comeback he engineered and 500th career touchdown pass — and not the unusual fashion in which the Saints won the game.
By virtue of the first missed conversion in Justin Tucker's seven-year career, the Saints pulled out a 24-23 victory Sunday.
Brees showing why he belongs among all-time elite QBs
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Drew Brees smiles widely and his eyes wander back to a time when he was a kid out of Purdue seeking his place in pro football.
He was marveling at the statistics posted by the likes of Dan Marino, Joe Montana and John Elway, Hall of Famers all. And he wondered "How long do you have to play in the league to have a chance at that?"
Drew Brees says Baker Mayfield ‘can be a lot better than me’
CLEVELAND (AP) — Drew Brees sees a lot of himself in Browns rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield.
And then some.
"I think he can be a lot better than me," the New Orleans Saints star said Wednesday.
Hall of Famer Favre visits Clemson, speaks to players
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson got another five-star quarterback on campus — Pro Football Hall of Famer Brett Favre.
Favre spent Wednesday visiting the Tigers, speaking with players and watching practice.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said he and Favre had recently become friendly and when Swinney asked Favre to visit, the one-time Green Bay Super Bowl champion accepted.
Favre surprised the players in their morning meeting, then spent time talking to them about life, the game and his 20-year NFL career.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Retired quarterback Brett Favre says he made three trips to rehabilitation centers during his Hall of Fame career to fight his dependence on painkillers and alcohol.
Favre told Sports Illustrated he took as many as 14 Vicodin at one time during the 1995 season in Green Bay. Favre won the first of his three consecutive Most Valuable Player awards that season.
Drafting Mayfield, Dorsey plants his flag: Darcy cartoon
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns drafting Baker Mayfield with the number one pick in the NFL draft should not have surprised anyone.
General Manager John Dorsey telegraphed that he would draft Mayfield when he traded for Tyrod Taylor and traded DeShone Kizer.
OU Football: Baker Mayfield recreates Brett Favre’s 1991 NFL Draft picture (and the Hall of Fame QB wants his jorts back)
Think Baker Mayfield is pretty loose just 24 hours before the biggest day of his life?
On Wednesday night – the eve of the 2018 NFL Draft – Mayfield choreographed a picture similar to Brett Favre’s draft day picture from 1991.
One of the less favorable comparisons Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield has drawn during the draft process is Johnny Manziel. But a few people have also seen parallels between Mayfield and Brett Favre.
That may or may not have been on Mayfield's mind when he had the idea to recreate this draft day photo of Favre and post it to social media:

Rodgers hopeful for contract extension as Packers retool
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — An offseason of change for the Green Bay Packers has been met with occasional displeasure by quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
At the Super Bowl, Rodgers called it "interesting" that the Packers replaced quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt "without consulting me." Also that week, he spoke of the possibility he might have to finish his career elsewhere, like predecessor Brett Favre.
Favre says he might have had “thousands” of concussions
Brett Favre says he might have had "thousands" of concussions during his Hall of Fame career.
The three-time NFL MVP who played from 1992-2010 and was known for his aggressive approach to football said Thursday on NBC's "Megyn Kelly Today" that he is experiencing short-term memory issues.
Favre, 48, has become an advocate for concussion research and said he had three or four known concussions during his lengthy career, which spanned 302 regular-season games and 24 in the postseason.
Mike McCarthy: Packers will take a ‘scrub-brush approach’ in search of improvement
ORLANDO, Fla. — Mike McCarthy learned his lesson at his very first NFL meetings. There is no time at the coaches’ breakfast for the coaches to, you know, actually eat breakfast.
That’s how he ended up with a cold, untouched plate of runny eggs and bacon in front of him in 2006 while legendary Sports Illustrated writer Paul “Dr. Z” Zimmerman grilled him on how he was going to coach Brett Favre. After that, McCarthy’s morning menu had one item on it: a cup of coffee.
Kirk Cousins’ lucrative Vikings contract is cost of doing business in high-stakes NFL
The Vikings were coming off a division championship in 2008 when they jumped at the opportunity to replace former second-round pick Tarvaris Jackson as their starting quarterback with Brett Favre. They paid the Hall of Famer $12 million for the 2009 season, and boosted his 2010 salary from $13 million to $16 million to lure him back one more time.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Philadelphia Eagles starting defensive tackle Tim Jernigan returned to practice Friday after missing two days this week because of an illness.

Justin Timberlake was asked who he was rooting for in Super Bowl LII. His answer? ‘Go, Pack, go’
Justin Timberlake flashed his love for the Green and Gold during a press conference to promote his return to the Super Bowl halftime show.
Asked by a Boston reporter Thursday whether he was rooting for the New England Patriots or the Philadelphia Eagles to win, Timberlake chose to avoid the question by answering with three little words: "Go, Pack, go."
As the halftime entertainer, it's understandable that Timberlake would avoid picking a side in the Super Bowl.
I don't have a pony in this show, but I did watch the last quarter of the Patriots AFC championship. Tom Brady & crew operated as if the game was theirs to win, & they won it. Their opponents played "not to lose." They lost. Philadelphia's fans pummeled Vikings fans in a needlessly boorish manner. Talk about sore winners. I hope they lose to New England. I hope N.E. comes from behind & scores the winning points as time expires. *
Philadelphia Eagles coach Doug Pederson won a Super Bowl ring following the 1996 season while backing up Brett Favre with the Green Bay Packers. Frank Reich, the Eagles offensive coordinator, was Jim Kellys understudy for each of the Buffalo Bills four Super Bowl trips, helping engineer the third one with the greatest comeback in NFL playoff history.
Do you believe in miracles? A man once asked that about a hockey team stuffed with Minnesotans, then answered, Yes!
Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium, the Minnesota Vikings gave us the Miracle of Minneapolis, a play without precedent in 56 years of franchise history.
Forty-two years ago, on the frozen turf of Bloomington, Drew Pearson nudged Nate Wright, caught a winning touchdown pass in a playoff game, and infected a franchise.

Then, to prove that you can indeed teach an old gunslinger new tricks, Favre passed along two thumbs-up emojis to Vikings fans getting set to watch their squad play the Saints in a NFC divisional playoff game at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Saints a revenge game for Vikings fans; players not so much
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — For fans of the Minnesota Vikings, at least the ones old enough to drive, there's a score to be settled with the New Orleans Saints.
Eight years ago, the last Minnesota team considered a strong Super Bowl contender was on the verge of victory in New Orleans in the NFC championship game despite four earlier turnovers inside the raucous Superdome.
A rejuvenated Saints team will come marching into U.S. Bank Stadium for the NFC divisional playoffs on Sunday, when the Vikings can take revenge on behalf of one of Minnesotas more recent playoff heartbreaks.
BARNEVELD -- It is rare to see a group of ice anglers without at least one of them, maybe all, having some sort of fishing bucket to sit on, carry gear in, and use to transport their catch home.
Just prior to last weekend’s New Year’s holiday, Doug Steiner of Verona, Evan Fernandez of Verona and Sam Favour of Mount Horeb set up their ice fishing shelter on tiny Birch Lake in Iowa County.
Is Vikings quarterbacks coach Kevin Stefanski grinding toward a coordinator job?
You know time flies when you look up and even young Kevin Stefanski has literally become an NFL graybeard.
Yes, it was 12 years ago that the Vikings quarterbacks coach was a 23-year-old kid packing up his car and following Brad Childress from Philadelphia to Minneapolis to be a teeny part of the staff that succeeded Mike Tice.
Hopes high as Vikings take bye, franchise scars to playoffs
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have begun another postseason adventure, backed by an often-burned fan base carrying several scars from flameouts of playoffs past.
Drew Brees becomes third quarterback in NFL history to pass for 70,000 yards
Drew Brees has taken another step on his ascent to the top of the NFL passing records mountain.
Brees became the third quarterback in NFL history to pass for more than 70,000 yards in his career with a 13-yard screen to Mark Ingram in the first quarter, joining Peyton Manning and Brett Favre.
Nobody has reached the milestone faster. Brees reached 70,000 in the 248th game of his career, beating Manning to the mark by 10 games.
Out of 32 NFL teams, one could argue that 15 will or might change quarterbacks in 2018.
Of those 15, 11 have been eliminated from the playoffs or sit outside the top six in their conference heading into Week 16.
That leaves four teams Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Jacksonville and the Vikings heading toward the playoffs while vying for the leagues most intriguing situation at quarterback.
GREEN BAY, Wis. It came with no Aaron Rodgers and no Davante Adams at the beginning of the night, and no Jordy Nelson by the end of it. But as they enjoy a long holiday weekend, Vikings fans arent likely to quibble with whatever qualifying factors there might have been in an emphatic victory over their biggest rivals.
The hit by Anthony Barr that changed the NFC: Loss of Aaron Rodgers altered the Packers’ course, vaulted Vikings
The closest thing the NFL has to Bedford Falls, N.Y. the idyllic town made famous in Frank Capras Its A Wonderful Life might be Green Bay, Wis., where the quarterbacking pursuits of Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers over the past quarter-century have ushered the football hamlet into a quarter-century of unprecedented prosperity.
Brady No. 1 QB by AP NFL panel; gets 9 of 11 No. 1 votes
There is little doubt the QB any NFL coach or player would want leading the way to win a big game right now is Tom Brady.
So it makes sense he was a nearly unanimous choice as the No. 1 quarterback in the league by an Associated Press panel.
Brady received nine of 11 first-place votes and was second on the other ballots for a total of 108 out of a possible 110 points in the rankings released Friday.
Matt Hasselbeck thinks he knows how John Dorsey will attack Cleveland Browns’ QB problem
When Matt Hasselbeck arrived to the Green Bay Packers, he was a sixth-round pick in 1998 and just the latest in a long line of quarterbacks the team brought in. Yes, this was the team that had Brett Favre, who would go on to set the NFL record for most consecutive games played. But the Packers always wanted to be more loaded at that position than any other team.
In the history of Vikings football, only two quarterbacks — Brett Favre and Daunte Culpepper — had ever gone four consecutive games with a passer rating over 100 until Case Keenum joined that group last Sunday in a road victory over Atlanta.
Vikings haven’t had a mainstay at quarterback in 25 years — but they routinely make the playoffs, anyway
On Sunday afternoon, the Vikings will suit up in Atlantas new $1.6 billion palace in search of their 10th win, behind a quarterback they signed to back up the quarterback they traded for after their first-round pick got hurt.
Bills brace for Brady, Patriots’ latest trip to Buffalo
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Having apparently been kept in the dark since being drafted by the Bills, rookie cornerback Tre'Davious White was genuinely curious about Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's career-long dominance of Buffalo.
"Uh, no, I don't know the record. What is it?" the first-round draft pick asked.
