Buffalo Sabres award captaincy to center Jack Eichel
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Center Jack Eichel has been selected captain of the Buffalo Sabres.
The team announced the decision Wednesday, a day before its season opener against Boston. Eichel becomes the Sabres' 16th full-time captain, and first to wear the "C'' since Brian Gionta handled the role from 2014-15 to 2016-17. Buffalo went with alternate captains the past two years.

"I never thought it would have lasted as long as it did," Gionta said. "I went into it hoping I could play one NHL game."
Little did Gionta know how far off he'd be in his initial expectations regarding his lack of size.
BOSTON (AP) — Dan Girardi scored 3:18 into overtime to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins on Friday night for a 3-1 lead in their Eastern Conference semifinal series.
The Lightning jumped ahead 2-0 for the second straight game. But this time Boston answered with three straight goals, including a short-handed score by Patrice Bergeron — his second of the game — to break a third-period tie.
Bruins sign US Olympic captain Brian Gionta
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Brian Gionta is returning for a 16th NHL season after the Boston Bruins signed the United States Olympic team captain to a one-year $700,000 contract.
The Bruins announced the signing on Sunday, a few hours after they acquired veteran forward Rick Nash in a multiplayer trade with the New York Rangers.

The Buffalo Sabres' American Hockey League affiliate announced the 16-year NHL veteran accepted an invitation to practice with the team starting Tuesday. The 38-year-old Gionta is from Rochester and spent the previous three seasons as the Sabres captain.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Sabres captain Brian Gionta was presented with a silver-plated stick before the opening faceoff of his 1,000th career game on Monday night.
Afterward, Gionta received a puck to go with it: The game-winner, in fact.
The 15-year NHL veteran celebrated his milestone evening by scoring what stood as the decisive goal in a 4-2 win over the Florida Panthers.
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Filip Forsberg scored 2:45 into overtime and the Nashville Predators came back to beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-4 on Tuesday night for their fourth straight win.
Forsberg had a goal and an assist in the final nine minutes of the third period to lead the Predators back from a 4-2 deficit. Forsberg has 10 goals and four assists during a six-game point streak.
Ryan Johansen, Colin Wilson and Mike Fisher also scored for the Predators.

MONTREAL (AP) — Max Pacioretty scored a hat trick, Carey Price made 37 saves and the Montreal Canadiens beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 on Tuesday night.
David Desharnais and Paul Byron also scored for Montreal. Alexander Radulov and Phillip Danault each had two assists.
Dmitry Kulikov and Brian Gionta scored for Buffalo late in the third period, and Robin Lehner stopped 30 shots.
Pacioretty scored once per period en route to his second hat trick of the season.
Eichel’s overtime winner lifts Sabres over Predators 5-4
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — On the bench, Jack Eichel talked the talk. On the ice, he certainly backed it up.
Eichel scored two goals, including the game-winner at 2:35 of overtime to give the Buffalo Sabres a 5-4 comeback victory over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night.
Zemgus Girgensons, Brian Gionta and Kyle Okposo also scored for Buffalo, which has won three straight.
Bogosian scores in overtime, Sabres edge Canadiens 3-2
MONTREAL (AP) — Zach Bogosian scored his first goal of the season in overtime and the Buffalo Sabres beat the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 on Saturday night in the second game of a back-to-back for both teams.
Sabres captain Brian Gionta and Cody Franson also scored. Robin Lehner stopped 36 shots.
Artturi Lehkonen and Phillip Danault scored for Montreal, and Carey Price made 35 saves.
Skinner keeps Canes rolling at home with win over Sabres
Jeff Skinner had two goals and an assist, Brock McGinn also scored twice and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 on Friday night.
Carolina swept its three-game series against Buffalo and won its third straight game overall. The Hurricanes are 14-4-1 at home, including 13-1-1 in the last 15 games in Raleigh.
Skinner scored two goals early in the second period, the first one giving him his 300th NHL point.
Laine hurt; Sabres rally in 3rd for 4-3 win over Jets
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Sabres used a big third period to slip past the Winnipeg Jets.
Brian Gionta scored Buffalo's third goal in a span of 4:46 of the third period and the Sabres overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat the Jets 4-3.
The Jets lost after winning the first two on a three-game trip. They also lost leading scorer Patrik Laine in the third period.
Sabres beat Red Wings 4-3 for Bylsma’s 300th victory
DETROIT (AP) — When the Red Wings finally caught up to the Sabres, Buffalo coach Dan Bylsma advised his team not to get concerned over the sudden momentum swing.
"When they tied it, we talked about it now being a 12-minute game," Bylsma said. "If we could beat them over the next 12 minutes, we'd get the win, and that's what happened."

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — An extended layoff helped the Carolina Hurricanes start fast and hold on late for their third victory in four games.
Jeff Skinner and Justin Faulk had first period goals in Carolina's 3-1 victory over Buffalo on Thursday night. Cam Ward made 22 saves and Sebastian Aho scored on an empty net in the final minute as the Hurricanes beat the Sabres for the second time in six days.
Ryan scores in shootout to lead Senators over Sabres 2-1
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Coming off what Guy Boucher called their "worst game of the year," the Ottawa Senators impressed their coach with a comeback effort Wednesday night.
Bobby Ryan and Kyle Turris scored during a shootout, helping the Senators beat the Buffalo Sabres 2-1.
Backup goaltender Mike Condon made 31 saves, including eight in overtime, as the Senators rebounded from a 3-1 loss in Nashville on Tuesday and avenged a 2-1 loss to the Sabres at home Saturday.
Larsson scores in 3rd to lift Sabres over Wild 2-1
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Johan Larsson has developed a knack for delivering when the Buffalo Sabres are in need of a goal.
Larsson had a third-period score in his return to Minnesota and Robin Lehner made 27 saves, lifting Buffalo to a 2-1 win against the Wild on Tuesday night.
A 2010 second-round pick by Minnesota, Larsson has seven game-winning goals among his 18 career tallies, and all seven in 83 games the past two seasons for the Sabres.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Kyle Okposo came through with his first multi-goal game with Buffalo Sabres, and Robin Lehner shut down the Winnipeg Jets to get the Sabres a needed win.
Okposo scored twice, Brian Gionta also had a goal, and Lehner made 37 saves to lead the Sabres to a 3-1 win over the Jets on Sunday.
The Jets outshot Buffalo 38-28, including 17-7 when in the third when they spoiled Lehner's shutout bid.
O’Reilly’s 4 points lift Sabres over Oilers 6-2
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Ryan O'Reilly had two goals and two assists and the Buffalo Sabres pounded the Edmonton Oilers 6-2 on Sunday night for their first victory of the season.
Brian Gionta also scored twice, and Kyle Okposo and Matt Moulson had Buffalo's other goals. Robin Lehner made 31 saves.
Benoit Pouliot and Milan Lucic scored for the Oilers, who had won back-to-back games before the loss.
