LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Atlanta Braves pitchers and catchers had their first organized workout Saturday, officially ending a relatively quiet winter for the team that won the NL East.
It may have been a little too quiet for some critics, considering the aggressive roster moves made by their division rivals. But All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman begs to differ.

Robinson Chirinos, Astros finalize $5.75M, 1-year contract
HOUSTON (AP) — Robinson Chirinos and the Astros have finalized a $5.75 million, one-year contract, giving catching-thin Houston another option behind the plate.
The 34-year-old spent the past six seasons with the Texas Rangers and hit .222 this year while setting career bests with 18 homers and 65 RBIs in 113 games. His .757 OPS was second among AL catchers.
He had a $2.25 million salary, and the Rangers declined a $4.5 million option that had a $100,000 buyout.
Donaldson, Braves reach a deal that works well for both
ATLANTA (AP) — Josh Donaldson needed the Braves.
The Braves needed Josh Donaldson.
Call this one a perfect match.
The slugging third baseman was officially introduced to Atlanta on Tuesday, joining the team he cheered for as a youngster. Donaldson agreed to a $23 million, one-year deal that provides the sort of flexibility both sides wanted.
Braves make free agent splash with Donaldson, McCann
ATLANTA (AP) — Brian McCann slipped on the No. 16 jersey he wore for so many years.
"It feels right," he said, over and over again.
Looking to improve on their first division title in five years, the Atlanta Braves agreed to one-year contracts with McCann and former AL MVP Josh Donaldson — a pair of low-risk moves that give the team a chance to make another postseason run while not hindering the long-term development of all those talented young players.
Astros decline $15 million option on McCann’s contract
HOUSTON (AP) — The Astros have declined their $15 million club option for 2019 on catcher Brian McCann.
McCann spent the last two seasons with Houston Astros after a trade from the New York Yankees in November 2016. McCann made $17 million last season in the final guaranteed year of a five-year, $85 million contract he signed in with the Yankees in 2014.
McCann, Reddick go back-to-back, Astros beat Blue Jays 5-3
TORONTO (AP) — The Houston Astros kept rolling on the road and moved to the brink of their second straight AL West title.
Brian McCann and Josh Reddick hit back-to-back home runs, and the Astros beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 on Monday night to close in on another division crown.
Astros rally for 9 runs in 8th, beats Angels 10-5
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston manager A.J. Hinch said the top of the eighth inning on Saturday night was one of the ugliest innings the Astros have had all season.
The bottom half of the inning was easily one of the team's best innings of the year.
Justin Verlander struck out 11 in six dominant innings, Jose Altuve capped a nine-run eighth with a two-run homer, and the Houston Astros rallied for a 10-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
LEADING OFF: Acuna’s instant pop, Astros skid, Paxton struck
A look at what's happening around the majors today:
Atlanta rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. has homered five games in a row — at 20, he's the youngest major leaguer to do that. He's also hit leadoff home runs in three straight, connecting the last two days on the first pitch Miami threw.
Acuna later added his 19th homer with a three-run drive in the seventh inning Tuesday night.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Houston Astros acquired catcher Martin Maldonado from the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday for left-hander Patrick Sandoval and $250,000 in international signing bonus pool allocation.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Houston Astros catcher Brian McCann finally got to a point that something had to be done to try to fix his troublesome right knee.
McCann had arthroscopic surgery Tuesday after going on the disabled list for the second time this season, and the third time in less than a year, because of knee discomfort.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Houston ace Justin Verlander made two mistakes, both resulting in home runs. The way the Astros are swinging the bats these days, it hardly mattered.
Verlander pitched five-hit ball over seven innings and the Astros jumped out to another early lead, beating the Oakland Athletics 7-3 Thursday for their eighth straight win.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Houston Astros have activated catcher Brian McCann from the disabled after he was sidelined because of right knee soreness.
McCann was in a 1-for-26 slide that dropped his batting average to .219 before going on the 10-day DL on May 29. He was activated on the first day he was eligible and was in the lineup batting eighth against the Texas Rangers on Friday night.
Some fantasy baseball owners often compare catchers to kickers in fantasy football. Really, they're more like tight ends, since kickers are unpredictable from week to week.
Still, it's hard to get excited about anyone at the position between the top few catchers. Even worse if you're in two-catcher leagues.
Let's take a look at a catcher who has more than just a pulse, as well as other players to help you in the short and long term.
NEW YORK (AP) — Astros catcher Brian McCann, in a 1-for-26 slide that has dropped his batting average to .219, was put on the 10-day disabled list on Tuesday because of right knee soreness and returned to Houston.
"Halfway or two-thirds through the game yesterday, he reported some knee soreness," manager A.J. Hinch said.
HOUSTON (AP) — Lance McCullers finally found his curveball — and the results were devastating for the Cleveland Indians.
McCullers allowed one hit over seven innings and Brian McCann hit a two-run homer to lead the Houston Astros to a 3-1 win Sunday night.
HOUSTON (AP) — Charlie Morton pitched seven solid innings, Tony Kemp had a tiebreaking RBI double in the seventh and the Houston Astros beat the Cleveland Indians 4-1 on Friday night for their third straight win.
Morton (6-0) allowed one run and four hits with eight strikeouts in extending his career-high winning streak to nine straight dating to last September. Morton retired 19 of the first 21 batters.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Home plate umpire Fieldin Culbreth has left the Los Angeles Angels' game against the Houston Astros after a foul ball from Shohei Ohtani hit him in the mask.
Culbreth left in the third inning Tuesday night.
Ohtani's foul off a 99-mph fastball from Gerrit Cole made an audible hit on the mask of Culbreth, who was visibly shaken. Culbreth grabbed on to Houston catcher Brian McCann, and the Angels' training staff immediately came out to help.
Morton strikes out 14 as Astros beat Rangers 6-1
HOUSTON (AP) — Charlie Morton struck out a career-high 14 in seven innings and Evan Gattis, Brian McCann and Carlos Correa homered, leading the Houston Astros to a 6-1 win over the Texas Rangers on Saturday night.
Morton (5-0) yielded four hits and a run while lowering his ERA to 2.03. He also extended his career-long winning streak to eight games dating to last season.
HOUSTON (AP) — One of the things the Houston Astros like best about Charlie Morton is his even-keeled demeanor.
The veteran starter never gets too high or too low, a quality that was on full display on Saturday night after he set a career-high with 14 strikeouts in a 6-1 win over the Texas Rangers.
He never cracked a smile as he spoke slowly, measuring every word. After several attempts to get him to talk about his big night, he was finally asked if he was even happy about his performance.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — As happy as AJ Hinch has been with the top of his lineup, the Astros' manager has been equally pleased with the production from the bottom half of the order, too.
Then again, the way Houston's offense has been going lately it doesn't seem to matter who is batting or where.
George Springer kept up his hitting surge with two hits and two RBIs, Alex Bregman homered and the Astros beat the Oakland Athletics 4-2 on Tuesday night.
Astros, Dodgers connect, riveting World Series onto Game 6
LOS ANGELES (AP) — At this rate, Justin Verlander might very well hit his first home run for real.
A classically poor-hitting pitcher, the Houston ace knocked one over the wall last week at Dodger Stadium in batting practice. Maybe that bolstered his belief that this batch of baseballs is slick and juiced.
