Texans have history of success in wild-card game
HOUSTON (AP) — Wild-card games have been a good place for the Houston Texans.

Miami’s Tannehill on schedule for possible return this week
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Ryan Tannehill is throwing the ball 50 yards in side sessions, and the Miami Dolphins would love to see those passes in a game.
Maybe this week.
Tannehill made progress during the team's bye week in his rehabilitation from a throwing shoulder injury, and remains on schedule to meet his goal of returning Sunday at Indianapolis.
Osweiler, Dolphins squander chances for TDs vs. Packers
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The injury-riddled Miami Dolphins still managed to generate plenty of scoring opportunities against the Green Bay Packers.
But they couldn't get into the end zone, and settling for field goals wasn't going to cut it against Aaron Rodgers.
Packers hope to bounce back against Dolphins’ pick-happy D
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — One team is starting a backup at quarterback but still above .500. The other boasts one of the NFL's best quarterbacks, yet has a losing record.
It's a topsy-turvy matchup when the Miami Dolphins visit the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
Miami’s Tannehill to miss Packers game with shoulder injury
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — For Ryan Tannehill, the pain persists. It hurts to throw, and it hurts not to play.
The Miami Dolphins quarterback will rest his injured throwing shoulder for the next several days and has been ruled out of Sunday's game at Green Bay, meaning replacement Brock Osweiler will make his fifth consecutive start.
The Dolphins (5-4) have a bye next week. The goal is for Tannehill to return for the game at Indianapolis on Nov. 25, he and coach Adam Gase said.
Dolphins’ Gase offers passionate defense of Tannehill
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase offered a passionate defense of Ryan Tannehill on Thursday, saying his beleaguered quarterback has showed improvement that continued into the start of this season.
Dolphins’ Tannehill ruled out of Sunday’s game against Jets
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the New York Jets, meaning Brock Osweiler will start for the fourth game in a row.
Tannehill, recovering from an injury in Week 5 to his throwing shoulder, was limited in practice Wednesday. He has begun throwing, but improvement in his shoulder has been unpredictable, coach Adam Gase said.
"Some days it feels a lot better," Gase said. "Some days it doesn't feel as good when he's throwing."
Texans and Dolphins both missing receivers
HOUSTON (AP) — Both the Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins were without a starting receiver on Thursday night with Houston's Keke Coutee out with a hamstring injury and Miami's Kenny Stills inactive because of a groin injury.

Miami’s Osweiler faces team that let him go in Texans
HOUSTON (AP) — When the Texans host the Miami Dolphins on Thursday night it will be a matchup of Houston's quarterback of the future in Deshaun Watson and one of the many failed quarterbacks of the team's past in Brock Osweiler.
It will be Osweiler's third straight start in place of Ryan Tannehill, who is out with a shoulder injury.
Brocktober continues: Dolphins QB Tannehill ruled out Sunday
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — With Ryan Tannehill ruled out of Sunday's game against Detroit, Brock Osweiler will get another start at quarterback, and the Miami Dolphins' super sub is optimistic he can deliver a successful encore to the most prolific game of his career last week.
But then Osweiler is always optimistic, even when he's playing lousy.
AP sources: NFL looking into Tannehill injury
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase described quarterback Ryan Tannehill's worsening injury last week as unusual, and now it has drawn the interest of the NFL.
The league is looking into how the Dolphins reported Tannehill's shoulder problem on injury reports last week, two people with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday. The people confirmed the NFL's interest in the matter to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the league wasn't commenting.
Gase: Miami’s Tannehill might return this week against Lions
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — The most prolific game of Brock Osweiler's career may have been a cameo.
With Ryan Tannehill nursing an injury to his throwing shoulder, it was uncertain Monday whether Osweiler will get another start for the Miami Dolphins.
Osweiler comes off bench to lead Miami past Bears, 31-28
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — When a field goal gave the Miami Dolphins a seesaw victory over the Chicago Bears, Brock Osweiler was the first player sprinting from the sideline onto the field in jubilation, capping an eventful day for the backup quarterback.
Even his morning commute was intense.
"I got a little emotional driving to the stadium today, just thinking about the opportunity," Osweiler said.

Sanders kicks FG as Dolphins rally past Bears 31-28 in OT
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Kicker Jason Sanders turned teammate Kenyan Drake's fumble into a footnote.
Drake lost the ball when the Miami Dolphins were on the verge of victory, but thanks to Sanders it didn't matter. The rookie made a 47-yard field goal as time expired in overtime Sunday for a 31-28 victory over the Chicago Bears.
Tannehill inactive, Osweiler starts for Dolphins
Quarterback Ryan Tannehill was inactive for the Miami Dolphins' game against the Chicago Bears because of an injury to his throwing shoulder, and Brock Osweiler made his first start for the team.
Tannehill was limited in Friday's workout — the first time he has missed practice time because of the injury. It began bothering him last month, and he was first on an injury report the week of Sept. 24.
Dolphins’ Tannehill questionable (shoulder) vs. Bears
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill is questionable for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears with a throwing shoulder injury that first bothered him last month.
Tannehill was limited in Friday's workout — the first time he has missed practice time because of the injury. He wasn't on the injury report last week, but was during the week of Sept. 24.
Brock Osweiler or David Fales would start if Tannehill can't play for the injury-plagued Dolphins.
Watson on key to success this season: “Be me. That’s it.”
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson isn't overthinking things as he prepares for his first game on Sunday at New England since a season-ending knee injury last November.
The key to being successful this year is simple.
"Really just one thing," he said. "Be me. That's it."
That approach helped Watson excel immediately as a rookie last season when he took over for Tom Savage at halftime of Houston's season opener.
Dolphins keep 3 QBs _ and battle for backup job continues
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Dolphins now have four quarterbacks on the roster, and they still have a battle for the backup job behind Ryan Tannehill.
Coach Adam Gase declined to say Sunday whether Brock Osweiler or David Fales would be first off the bench to replace Tannehill, but said he expects to keep all three all season. Even so, the Dolphins found room on their roster to add rookie quarterback Luke Falk, claimed one day after being waived by the Tennessee Titans.
Former starting CB Tony Lippett waived by Dolphins
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Former starting cornerback Tony Lippett has been waived by the Miami Dolphins after missing all of last season with a torn Achilles tendon.
Lippett started 13 games in 2016 but struggled returning from his injury in training camp this year.
Also cut Saturday was receiver Leonte Carroo, a third-round pick in 2016 who has only 10 receptions in two seasons.
Osweiler makes bid for backup QB job, Dolphins top Falcons
ATLANTA (AP) — Dolphins coach Adam Gase won't be shopping elsewhere for his backup to starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
"It's going to be one of those two guys," Gase said after watching Brock Osweiler and David Fales split the playing time in Miami's final preseason game.
Osweiler enjoyed the more impressive final audition, leading three first-quarter touchdown drives in the Dolphins' 34-7 preseason win over the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night.

Backup battle: Dolphins’ No. 2 quarterback still unclear
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins quarterback David Fales has been on the bubble for his entire five-year NFL career, so he almost sounds convincing when he says Thursday's exhibition finale at Atlanta is just another game.
Waived four times and released from a practice squad twice, Fales will likely be awarded the No. 2 job for the first time if he plays well against the Falcons.
Broncos Training Camp Capsule
DENVER BRONCOS (5-11)
OPEN CAMP: July 27, Englewood, Colorado
LAST YEAR: Coach Vance Joseph's first year was debacle in every phase. Denver's anemic offense cycled through three QBs during soured season that included eight-game skid, franchise's longest in half-century, and featured eight double-digit losses. Exhausted defense surrendered too many points and special teams were anything but. GM John Elway thought about firing Joseph but decided to give him second chance and then bolstered roster.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — One thing that Peyton Manning, Brock Osweiler, Trevor Siemian, Mark Sanchez and Paxton Lynch all quickly learned in Denver was that nothing comes easy against the Broncos' "No Fly Zone" secondary at practice.
It's something opposing quarterbacks discover on game day.
Aqib Talib and T.J. Ward are no longer here, but Chris Harris Jr., Darian Stewart, Justin Simmons and Bradley Roby remain.
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase says he likes his revamped roster, and that includes the quarterbacks who will compete this summer to back up Ryan Tannehill.
MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Dolphins have claimed quarterback Bryce Petty a day after he was waived by the New York Jets.
With Miami's move Friday, Petty joins veterans Brock Osweiler and David Fales in the competition for the backup job behind Ryan Tannehill.
Petty spent three seasons with New York after being selected in the fourth round of the 2015 draft. He played in 10 games for the Jets, throwing for 1,353 yards and four touchdowns with 10 interceptions, and went 1-6 as a starter.
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Dolphins have been saying all offseason that Ryan Tannehill will be their starting quarterback in 2018, and the draft didn't change that.
Miami still has used a first-round pick on a QB only once since 1984 — and that was Tannehill six years ago. The Dolphins didn't add a QB with any of their other seven draft choices this week, either.
Browns holding 3 picks in second round of NFL draft
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The Browns will again pick first on Day 2 of the NFL draft.
Cleveland has the No. 33 overall pick, a selection at the top of the second round that has traditionally drawn strong interest for trades. General manager John Dorsey's phone could be active overnight before the Browns are back on the clock Friday night with the first of their three second-round picks.
QB Brock Osweiler signs 1-year deal with Dolphins
MIAMI (AP) — Coach Adam Gase's new backup quarterback in Miami is his former backup quarterback in Denver.
Brock Osweiler signed a one-year contract Friday with the Dolphins to provide veteran insurance behind Ryan Tannehill, who is coming back from two knee operations.
Gase was an assistant with the Broncos when Osweiler was a young reserve for them in 2012-14. Osweiler went 0-4 as the Broncos' starter last season and has 25 career starts in six NFL seasons.

Osweiler or Lynch? Broncos QB carousel keeps spinning
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — The Denver Broncos' quarterback carousel continues to spin, and no one's quite sure when or where it'll stop.
After Brock Osweiler was 22 of 38 for 193 yards with an interception and a fumble in a loss to Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins, coach Vance Joseph hopes to get Paxton Lynch some snaps in the season finale next week against the AFC West-champion Kansas City Chiefs (9-6).
Joseph blunt about navigating quarterback uncertainty
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos began 2017 ensnared in a dreaded quarterback competition and they're ending the year entangled in another.
Paxton Lynch lost out to Trevor Siemian last summer and it's doubtful after missing most of the season that he could beat out Brock Osweiler this week in a fair fight.
But this week is about splitting snaps at practice, not even-handedness.
Osweiler’s strong relief appearance leads Broncos past Colts
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Denver Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler played like a relaxed reliever on Thursday.
He couldn't have picked a better time.
With Paxton Lynch inactive and Trevor Siemian out after two series, Osweiler trotted onto the field, ran for one touchdown and threw for two more to lead the Broncos past Indianapolis 25-13 for their first road win of the season.
Broncos have unconventional advice for nontraditional QB
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Vance Joseph has a non-traditional quarterback on his hands, so conventional wisdom has been shunted aside in Denver along with two veteran QBs.
A six-game skid convinced the Broncos (3-7) to make major changes to their wheezing offense.
Change takes center stage when Broncos visit Raiders
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — When a season that started with such promise turns into disappointment, change is inevitable.
That's exactly the case this season in Denver and Oakland.
With the Broncos (3-7) heading into this week's AFC West showdown in Oakland on Sunday on a six-game losing streak, and the Raiders (4-6) coming off a lopsided loss that put another dent into their playoff hopes, both teams underwent a bit of an overhaul this week.
Englewood, Colo. — Twenty-one months ago, John Elway was basking in a confetti shower as he put his fingerprints on the third Super Bowl trophy he's captured for the Denver Broncos and dedicated it to team owner Pat Bowlen, who's battling Alzheimer's.
Not much has gone right for Elway and the Broncos since that night in Northern California.
Denver Broncos have hit a rough patch
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Twenty-one months ago, John Elway was basking in a confetti shower as he put his fingerprints on the third Super Bowl trophy he's captured for the Denver Broncos and dedicated it to team owner Pat Bowlen, who's battling Alzheimer's.
Not much has gone right for Elway and the Broncos since that night in Northern California.
Broncos’ Lynch will serve as Brock Osweiler’s backup
Broncos quarterback Paxton Lynch is active for the first time this season and will serve as Brock Osweiler's backup.
Trevor Siemian has gone from starter to backup to inactive over the past month.
Rookie punter returner Isaiah McKenzie was benched after his fifth fumble. Wide receiver Jordan Taylor takes over the punt return duties.
Brock Osweiler looks ahead, not over his shoulder at Lynch
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Unless the Denver Broncos can regain control of a season skidding out of control, Paxton Lynch could get the starting quarterback job he's never been able to earn outright.
Broncos bench rookie returner, Lynch’s workload increases
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The slumping Denver Broncos have a new punt returner and a new backup outside linebacker. They might be getting a fresh face at quarterback soon, too.
Broncos sticking with QB, beleaguered special teams coach
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Both Brocks are keeping their jobs in Denver, where the Broncos are mired in their worst funk in decades.
Coach Vance Joseph said Monday that quarterback Brock Osweiler will start against Cincinnati next weekend, getting his third consecutive start despite being 0-2 since replacing Trevor Siemian.
Really, Osweiler has been the least of Denver's worries in 28- and 25-point blowouts.
Joseph gave his beleaguered special teams coach Brock Olivo a vote of confidence, too.
