MEXICO CITY (AP) — A union declared total victory in a mass strike by about 25,000 workers at 48 assembly plants in a Mexican border city, but the movement spawned a storm of wildcat walkouts Monday at other businesses.
The Industrial Workers and Laborers' Union won 20 percent wage increases at all 48 "maquiladora" factories in Matamoros, across the border from Brownsville, Texas. It also won a one-time bonus of about 32,000 pesos, about $1,685 at current exchange rates.
Judge says feds may survey historic chapel’s land for wall
MCALLEN, Texas (AP) — A judge has ruled the federal government may enter the property of a historic South Texas chapel to survey its suitability for a border wall.
U.S. District Judge Randy Crane on Wednesday rejected the Brownsville Roman Catholic diocese's argument that granting federal access to the La Lomita Chapel would violate federal religious freedom laws.
Crane ruled Wednesday in McAllen that allowing the access would pose no burden on the Mission, Texas, chapel.
Mexican border strikers win agreements at 27 of 45 plants
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Striking workers in the Mexican border city of Matamoros say they have reached deals with 27 of 48 assembly plants, winning wage increases of 20 percent.
The strikers in Matamoros, south of Brownsville, Texas, have now reached deals with a majority of the plants where more than 25,000 walked out Friday.
The factories make auto parts, medical equipment, plastics and other goods. More than one-third of the city's 130 border assembly plants were affected.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — More than 25,000 Mexican workers at dozens of factories south of Brownsville, Texas, went on strike Friday after owners of the plants that assemble for export refused union demands for a 20 percent pay hike and an annual bonus.
The Union of Maquiladora Industry Industrial Workers of Matamoros, the SJOIIM, said that by late Saturday nine companies had agreed to meet the salary and bonus demands.

Ismael Hernandez Vallejo (vah-YAY'-hoh) was sentenced in a Texas court in Brownsville after pleading guilty Tuesday to murder in the death of agent Javier (hahv-YEHR') Vega Jr. He also pleaded guilty to attempted capital murder in the shooting of Vega's father.

Officials with the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville have announced the rhinoceros hornbills are now on display. Officials say it's been 45 years since the zoo had any rainforest-dwelling rhinoceros hornbills, known for the hollow horn-like feature above their beaks.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — The superintendent of a South Texas school district has been put on administrative leave with pay amid an investigation into what she said involves facility projects.
Trustees of the Brownsville Independent School District voted unanimously Friday night to place Superintendent Esperanza Zendejas on immediate leave during the review. School officials, who met in executive session prior to the 7-0 vote, did not provide a reason.
Mexican gets 20 months for immigrant smuggling by soldiers
BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A Mexican man living in the U.S. illegally must serve 20 months in prison for arranging immigrants to be smuggled by Fort Hood soldiers through a Texas border checkpoint.
Victoriano Zamora-Jasso was sentenced Wednesday in Brownsville. The 54-year-old Zamora-Jasso in January pleaded guilty to conspiracy to transport and harbor immigrants and illegal re-entry after deportation.
Endangered white rhino on display at South Texas zoo
BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — An endangered white rhino named Bebop is the newest member of a South Texas zoo, and zookeepers hope he gets along with his new female neighbors.
The 5-year-old Southern white rhino recently joined other endangered white rhinos on display at Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville. White rhinos are listed as near threatened, mostly from habitat loss and poaching, on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's List of Endangered Species.
