LB Mauldin, RBs Rawls and West among 14 cut by Jets
NEW YORK (AP) — Mike Maccagnan's first draft class with the New York Jets took two big hits on cutdown day.
Linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin and defensive tackle Deon Simon were both waived Saturday as the Jets reduced their roster to the NFL's 53-man limit.
Former starting CB Tony Lippett waived by Dolphins
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Former starting cornerback Tony Lippett has been waived by the Miami Dolphins after missing all of last season with a torn Achilles tendon.
Lippett started 13 games in 2016 but struggled returning from his injury in training camp this year.
Also cut Saturday was receiver Leonte Carroo, a third-round pick in 2016 who has only 10 receptions in two seasons.
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase says he likes his revamped roster, and that includes the quarterbacks who will compete this summer to back up Ryan Tannehill.
MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Dolphins have claimed quarterback Bryce Petty a day after he was waived by the New York Jets.
With Miami's move Friday, Petty joins veterans Brock Osweiler and David Fales in the competition for the backup job behind Ryan Tannehill.
Petty spent three seasons with New York after being selected in the fourth round of the 2015 draft. He played in 10 games for the Jets, throwing for 1,353 yards and four touchdowns with 10 interceptions, and went 1-6 as a starter.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have waived quarterback Bryce Petty, parting ways with their 2015 fourth-round draft pick after three seasons.
The move Thursday comes a week after the Jets drafted USC quarterback Sam Darnold with the No. 3 overall pick.
New York currently has four quarterbacks on its roster, including Darnold, Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater and Christian Hackenberg.
The New York Jets find themselves in the same position they seem to every single year when the regular season ends.
Looking for the answer at quarterback.
Right now, the Jets have just two quarterbacks on the roster – Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg. Petty has yet to show much in the way of starting ability, with just 1,353 yards, four touchdowns and 10 interceptions across 10 games while competing just 53 percent of his passes. It’s a small sample size but feels like enough.
Jets’ Shell has concussion, won’t play against Patriots
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets right tackle Brandon Shell will not play in the season finale against the New England Patriots because of a concussion.
Shell was injured while making a tackle on Keenan Allen's interception of Bryce Petty's Hail Mary toss that ended the first half of New York's 14-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last Sunday.
Petty remains Jets starter, but could Hackenberg see action?
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — There's a chance that Christian Hackenberg could — finally — make his regular-season debut for the New York Jets.
Well, maybe. Or, maybe not.
So, stay tuned.
Coach Todd Bowles reiterated Wednesday that Bryce Petty remains the Jets' starting quarterback and will be under center against the New England Patriots on Sunday. But Bowles also did not rule out Hackenberg seeing his first action in a regular-season game.
Jets’ Petty enters second start of year looking for progress
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The numbers were far from pretty, and some of the tape wasn't much better.
But Bryce Petty saw positives in his first start of the season as the New York Jets' quarterback. And so did offensive coordinator John Morton.
Now, it's all about progress as Petty prepares to face the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
Injured McCown to serve as player-coach for Jets vs. Saints
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Josh McCown is going from quarterback to coach for the New York Jets this weekend.
The injured McCown will travel with the team to New Orleans and serve as a player-coach on the sideline against the Saints on Sunday.
"He asked for it, but we were going to ask him anyway, if he was up to it," coach Todd Bowles said Thursday.
Petty ready for latest shot as Jets’ starting QB
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Bryce Petty is getting another chance to prove to the New York Jets that he can be their quarterback of the future.
He's their man under center right now, at the very least, and will make his fifth NFL start Sunday against the Saints in New Orleans.
Jets QB Josh McCown out for rest of season with broken hand
NEW YORK (AP) — The best season of Josh McCown's career has come to an abrupt and painful end.
The New York Jets quarterback who established himself as a respected leader will miss the team's final three games with a broken left hand that will require surgery.
Jets focused on wins, not throwing young QBs into games
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Jets aren't ready to sacrifice wins now for a glimpse at an uncertain future.
A day after coach Todd Bowles insisted that Josh McCown will remain the starter under center, quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates reiterated that point — regardless of the growing sentiment outside the facility that it might be time for Christian Hackenberg or Bryce Petty to get an opportunity.
Jets’ Bowles says he’s sticking with McCown at QB
NEW YORK (AP) — Josh McCown is still the man under center for Todd Bowles and the New York Jets.
A day after his team dropped to 4-6 heading into its bye-week break, Bowles insisted he's not considering making a quarterback change from the 38-year-old veteran to either Christian Hackenberg or Bryce Petty.
Jets GM not discouraged by Hackenberg’s development
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Christian Hackenberg remains a big mystery for the New York Jets.
The second-year quarterback has yet to take a snap in a regular-season game, and it appears he won't get an opportunity any time soon.
Hackenberg is the Jets' No. 3 quarterback, stuck behind backup Bryce Petty and 38-year-old starter Josh McCown. For a player selected in the second round of the NFL draft, some might have expected a lot more progress — at least on the depth chart.
McCown starts, has injury scare in Jets’ win over Eagles
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Josh McCown had the wind knocked out of him, and the New York Jets could only hold their breath.
The 38-year-old quarterback was OK after getting the start — and a big scare — in the preseason finale as the Jets held on to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 16-10 on Thursday night.
"Thankfully, it wasn't anything serious," McCown said.
McCown, starters could play in Jets’ preseason finale
NEW YORK (AP) — It could be all hands on deck for the New York Jets' preseason finale.
Coach Todd Bowles said all of his healthy players could be available to play against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night — and that includes quarterbacks Josh McCown, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg.
Bowles wouldn't reveal his plans for the game, but he also didn't rule out playing all three quarterbacks.
No surprise: Josh McCown named Jets’ starting quarterback
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Josh McCown is ready to roll — even if he hasn't played much this preseason.
Jets coach Todd Bowles announced Monday that McCown will start at quarterback in New York's regular-season opener at Buffalo on Sept. 10, ending a strange training camp competition that included Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty.
"It's a lot overall," Bowles said of the decision to go with McCown. "He gives us the best chance to win right now."
McAdoo annoyed with NFL over 4th-quarter non-play and injury
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Giants coach Ben McAdoo is upset with the NFL's handling of a replay review in a preseason game against the Jets.
McAdoo said Sunday that the league failed to alert the game officials before the next snap and the Giants not only lost a possible late, game-clinching sack and fumble recovery but rookie free agent defensive end Evan Schwan broke his foot on what turned out to be a non-play in the Giants' 32-31 win on Saturday night.
Defense scores 3 times, Manning sharp in Giants win
EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (AP) — If only the New York Giants could play the Jets every week.
Landon Collins and Donte Deayon scored on interception returns, Jason Pierre-Paul recorded a safety and Eli Manning and the offense showed a little life for the first time this preseason as the Giants turned the annual game for the braggin' rights of New York into an early laugher and late thriller with a 32-31 win Saturday night.
As training camp ends, no real clarity on Jets’ starting QB
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets wrapped up training camp and their quarterback situation appears to be the same as it did a month ago.
Well, sort of.
Josh McCown remains the front-runner to start, Christian Hackenberg made some progress and Bryce Petty is third on the depth chart. But the past week or so left several questions about what exactly is going on in the minds of coach Todd Bowles and his staff.
Hackenberg, Petty see most reps again in Jets practice
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets' curious quarterback competition continues.
Sure, Todd Bowles has said he'll probably have a decision Monday on his starter for Week 1 of the regular season. But it's unclear who'll be under center in the team's third preseason game on Saturday night against the Giants.
Bowles will announce Jets’ starting QB next Monday
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Todd Bowles will declare the winner of the New York Jets' quarterback competition next Monday.
And, it would be a total stunner if Josh McCown isn't under center for the regular-season opener on Sept. 10 at Buffalo.
Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty are also in the mix, but the 38-year-old McCown has been the front-runner for the job since signing a one-year, $6 million deal with New York in March.
The Way We Hear It: New York Jets’ QB battle already over? One player believes so
Much has been made about the New York Jets’ three-headed monster (scary indeed) of a quarterback battle in training camp. The starting job, it has been written, is open — and Josh McCown, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty are in the running.
But one Jets offensive leader isn’t so sure there’s even anything up for grabs.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — One after the other, each of the New York Jets' three quarterbacks took turns tossing passes to receivers on the first day of training camp.
First, Josh McCown. Then Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty.
All eyes were on the quarterbacks Saturday, but it's a competition that lacks star power and, some might argue, overwhelming talent.
"They've been working hard," coach Todd Bowles said. "They've all been learning and studying. We just have to see them play."
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Quincy Enunwa knows that most opinions of the New York Jets' wide receivers are far from favorable.
He and his teammates respectfully disagree.
"How can they know better when they haven't seen anything?" Enunwa said about the naysayers. "It's up to us to prove them wrong."
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Picking a starting quarterback is no snap decision for Todd Bowles.
The New York Jets coach has a journeyman veteran in Josh McCown and two inexperienced youngsters in Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg from which to choose.
And with the team's three-day minicamp completed, there's still no clear-cut answer to the biggest question surrounding the franchise.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Bryce Petty is in the middle of a three-way quarterback competition that many believe is truly just a two-man race.
And, he's the odd-man out.
"I mean, it's OTAs," Petty said Tuesday after the New York Jets' fourth practice of organized team activities. "How do you have an underdog?"
Well, there's Josh McCown, the veteran mentor who appears to be the front-runner to start in the season opener at Buffalo on Sept. 10.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets' starting quarterback job is up for grabs.
That means a three-man competition this spring — and maybe summer — between Josh McCown, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, with the winner under center for the regular-season opener. At least that's the company line, as expected, at the moment.
"We're giving everybody a great opportunity to show themselves," new offensive coordinator John Morton said Tuesday, "and see if they can be the starter."
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have claimed speedy wide receiver KD Cannon off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers.
The team also announced Tuesday it had waived wide receiver Deshon Foxx to make room on the roster for Cannon.
Cannon was signed last week by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Baylor, but was waived Sunday.
NEW YORK (AP) — Josh McCown has every intention of being the New York Jets' starting quarterback this season.
Whether that means 16 games, eight or just one, the 37-year-old veteran believes he can still be plenty productive. But if McCown ends up being the backup — and an invaluable mentor — to either Christian Hackenberg or Bryce Petty, he's OK with that, too.
McCown, Jets get started on 1st day of offseason program
NEW YORK (AP) — Josh McCown has been through this plenty during his NFL career.
The New York Jets are the 10th team the veteran quarterback has been with since 2002, so he's sort of an expert in getting acquainted with teammates in new surroundings.
Jets sign veteran QB Josh McCown to 1-year deal
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Jets have turned to Josh McCown in their winter-long search for a quarterback.
The team announced the signing of the veteran free agent on Monday night.
AP source: Jets meeting with free agent QB Josh McCown
NEW YORK (AP) — Josh McCown might be the answer — in the short term, at least — for the quarterback-needy Jets.
The free agent QB is meeting with New York on Friday and Saturday, according to a person with direct knowledge of the situation.
Peake, Shell, Simon among Jets who could have bigger roles
NEW YORK (AP) — Next season is already here for Mike Maccagnan and the New York Jets.
As the NFL playoffs begin without the Jets for the sixth straight year, the general manager faces plenty of questions in an offseason of uncertainty .
Fitzpatrick, not Hackenberg, to start in Jets’ season finale
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Christian Hackenberg's NFL debut will have to wait until next season.
Todd Bowles and the New York Jets are turning back to Ryan Fitzpatrick to start at quarterback against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
Rather than give Hackenberg a late-season look in a game that means nothing in the standings for the 4-11 Jets, Bowles is giving Fitzpatrick one final turn under center.
"He was the backup," Bowles said of Fitzpatrick, "so now, he's the starter."
Jeff Howe details the game stats after watching the film from Saturday’s 41-3 Patriots victory over the New York Jets:
Jets put QB Petty on injured reserve
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Bryce Petty has been placed on injured reserve by the New York Jets, ending the second-year quarterback's short stint as the starting quarterback.
Petty tore the labrum in his left shoulder Saturday against New England while tackling Malcolm Butler following a second-quarter turnover. He went on IR on Monday, and the Jets claimed outside linebacker Corey Lemonier off waivers from Detroit.
Jets center Wesley Johnson on Petty injury: ‘It was on me’
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Wesley Johnson watched his quarterback writhing on the turf and knew it was all his fault.
Bryce Petty was sandwiched last Saturday by Miami's Cameron Wake and Ndamukong Suh while throwing a pass in the New York Jets' 34-13 loss, suffering a bruised chest that looked to be a lot worse at first. X-rays and a CT scan were negative, and Petty will start Saturday at New England.
Petty fully practices, will start for Jets at New England
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Bryce Petty is ready to roll.
The New York Jets quarterback was a full participant at practice Wednesday and is on track to start at New England on Saturday.
Coach Todd Bowles said Petty would make his fourth NFL start after the quarterback suffered a bruised chest against Miami last Saturday night.
Jets’ Petty says chest feeling better, expects to play
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Bryce Petty's bruised chest is feeling better, and the chocolate chip cookies he received from an apologetic teammate should help with the healing process.
The New York Jets quarterback was injured last Saturday night when he was sandwiched by Miami's Cameron Wake and Ndamukong Suh while completing a 28-yard pass to Robby Anderson on the first play of the fourth quarter in New York's 34-13 loss.
X-rays at the stadium were negative, as was a CT scan Monday.
Jets’ Bowles says tests on Petty’s chest negative
NEW YORK (AP) — Jets coach Todd Bowles says during a radio interview that a CT scan on Bryce Petty's chest was negative and the quarterback could play Saturday at New England.
Jets uncertain on Petty’s status after chest injury
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Jets were waiting for results from tests on Bryce Petty's injured chest before making a quarterback decision.
Petty was scheduled to have a CT scan on Sunday to make sure he didn't have a bruised or punctured lung after being knocked out of New York's 34-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Saturday night. X-rays at the stadium were negative.
During a conference call, Todd Bowles said Petty was still having tests.
Jets’ Petty leaves with chest injury, having CT scan
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Bryce Petty hopes a chest injury won't keep him on the sideline next weekend.
The Jets quarterback was knocked out of New York's 34-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Saturday night on the first play of the fourth quarter when he got sandwiched by Cameron Wake and Ndamukong Suh as he completed a 28-yard pass down the right sideline to Robby Anderson.
Jets’ Petty looks for improvement, less nerves in next start
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Chan Gailey watched Bryce Petty scramble to his left and, with a defender in his face, launch a pass down the field across his body — and off his back foot.
The first reaction by the New York Jets offensive coordinator probably mirrored that of many fans.
"No! No! No!" Gailey recalled with a smile Wednesday. "Then, he had a great play, and you get your call sheet ready for the next one."
Petty not pretty, but mostly solid with ‘moxie’ in Jets win
NEW YORK (AP) — Rough beginning, gritty finish — and a mostly solid performance.
That was Bryce Petty's second NFL start in a nutshell, a 23-17 overtime victory for the New York Jets on Sunday at San Francisco.
"He had some moxie," coach Todd Bowles said during a conference call Monday. "But he had some reads he'd like to have back and some things he could've done better, but as the game went on, he got a little more comfortable and started using his legs better."
Chip Kelly: 49ers need to keep fighting amid losing streak
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Chip Kelly is facing the unenviable task of getting his team ready for its next game to stop the worst losing streak in franchise history.
Kelly's 49ers have lost 12 straight , with the last two coming against teams with 18 losses combined while starting backup quarterbacks. Falling to the Matt Barkley-led Bears and Bryce Petty-led Jets has Kelly trying to pick up the pieces before traveling to Atlanta to play the Falcons (8-5) and MVP candidate Matt Ryan.
Powell steps up to lead Jets to 23-17 OT win over 49ers
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Bilal Powell has been a complementary running back for most of his career, trying to make the most of whatever opportunity comes his way.
When Matt Forte went down with a knee injury in the first quarter and the New York Jets not wanting to put too much on Bryce Petty's plate in his second career start, Powell got plenty of chances.
Powell, Petty rally Jets past 49ers 23-17 in overtime
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Bilal Powell made sure that Bryce Petty's rough start had a positive finish for the New York Jets.
Powell ran for 145 yards, including the game-ending 19-yard touchdown in overtime, to help Petty and the New York Jets rally from 14 points down to beat the San Francisco 49ers 23-17 on Sunday.
"It shows the character we have," Powell said. "It's not the season that everyone was expecting but we keep fighting and we have a lot of guys on the team who showed a lot of pride."
Gailey: Petty had to learn ‘everything’ when he got to Jets
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Chan Gailey has been busy developing Bryce Petty from the moment the quarterback came to the New York Jets last year as a fourth-round draft pick.
The offensive coordinator had to start from scratch, though, right down to the basics.
"When he came here, coming from (Baylor's) offense, where they never even huddled, he had to learn huddling," Gailey said Thursday.
