Texas county approves post-Harvey flood construction rules
HOUSTON (AP) — Officials in a Texas county devastated by Hurricane Harvey approved new regulations Tuesday on building construction in flood-prone locations, rules they touted as the nation's toughest for a major metropolitan area.
The rules taking effect Jan. 1 in unincorporated parts of Harris County will increase the required elevation for new homes and other structures to avoid floodwaters. Some new structures could be elevated up to 8 feet higher than current regulations require.

2 workers injured at Facebook building construction site
MENLO PARK, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say work has halted at a Facebook building under construction in California after an equipment failure caused part of the structure to collapse, injuring two workers.
The city of Sugar Land is looking for volunteers to serve as members on the Planning and Zoning Commission and Building Standards Commission.
Applications must be submitted electronically by April 10 at 5 p.m. through the Serve Sugar Land website at https://volunteer.sugarlandtx.gov.

Norfolk seeing uptick in residential building construction
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Norfolk is seeing a burst of residential building construction.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that (http://bit.ly/2leBgpz ) 1,435 new dwelling units received residential building permits in 2016. Officials say that's the most since at least 2000, which is as far back as staff members have looked.
The average amount of residential building permits handed out over the last five years was 824.

SLEEPY EYE -As construction workers firmed up foundation walls at the Sleepy Eye Event Center site on the east end of town, the Sleepy Eye City Council unanimously approved the issuance of bids Monday.
Approved by councilor Dick Zinniel, seconded by Nate Stevermer, the resolution approved issuing Bid Package 2 estimated at $3,414,070 for building construction and other remaining costs. Construction could begin as early as January 2017.
Construction slowing a bit in Billings, but employment remains strong
Building construction in Billings tapered off slightly in the first nine months of 2016, particularly compared to the brisk years earlier this decade.
But, builders say it's still a healthy market.
Builders filed 422 building permits with the city through September of the year, down from 446 permits during the same period in 2015.
