Jets’ secondary will be down a few key players vs. Vikings
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets' secondary will be short-handed against Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings.
Cornerback Buster Skrine and safety Marcus Maye are out for the game Sunday, and cornerback Trumaine Johnson is doubtful to play.
Skrine has a concussion that has caused him to miss most of the last two games. Maye is dealing with a broken right thumb. Meanwhile, Johnson — the Jets' top free-agent signing — will likely miss his third straight game with a quadriceps injury.
Jets’ Buster Skrine out, Trumaine Johnson doubtful vs. Colts
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets' secondary will be without a few key members against the Indianapolis Colts.
Cornerback Buster Skrine has been ruled out for Sunday with a concussion. Fellow cornerback Trumaine Johnson is listed Friday as doubtful with a quadriceps injury that sidelined him last Sunday against Denver.
Rookie Parry Nickerson could fill Skrine's nickel spot, while Darryl Roberts and Rashard Robinson could see time in the base defense in Johnson's place.
Jets activate CB Robinson, release S Wilcox
NEW YORK (AP) — The Jets activated cornerback Rashard Robinson and released safety J.J. Wilcox on Monday.
New York had until 4 p.m. EDT to activate or release Robinson, who returned to the team last week on a roster exemption following a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.
Robinson was arrested and charged with drug possession and carelessly driving in Morris County, New Jersey, last December. Police accused Robinson of having marijuana-laced candy in his car.
Jets’ ‘New Jack City’ DBs look to ‘control the airways’
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Morris Claiborne's T-shirt had three words printed on it that represent a new era in the New York Jets' secondary.
"New Jack City" is etched in sharp black letters and framed by a whited-out Manhattan-like skyline, closely resembling the artwork from the soundtrack to the 1991 hit action gangster movie.
Helmet penalty flags fly in Jets’ win over Falcons
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — No one was safe from the NFL's new helmet rule during Friday night's game between the Atlanta Falcons and New York Jets. Every facet of the game was affected: defense, offense and special teams. A penalty showed up in each.
"I'm anxious to go back and look at those," Atlanta coach Dan Quinn said.
The rule first struck specials teams in the opening quarter, well before the Jets closed out the Falcons 17-0 at MetLife Stadium.
Jets CB Burris out for game vs. Chiefs with concussion
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets backup cornerback Juston Burris has been ruled out against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday because of a concussion.
Burris was injured last Sunday against Carolina and did not practice all week while in the league's concussion protocol. Coach Todd Bowles says Rashard Robinson, Robert Nelson and rookie Derrick Jones could fill in at Burris' spot as New York's No. 4 cornerback behind Morris Claiborne, Buster Skrine and Darryl Roberts.
Skrine fined $48K for illegal hit, Burfict not fined
NEW YORK (AP) — Jets cornerback Buster Skrine was fined $48,620 for his illegal hit on Tampa Bay receiver DeSean Jackson last week and Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict wasn't fined after his ejection against Tennessee for pushing away the arm of an official who tried to break up a sideline scuffle.
Burfict wasn't fined for his late hit out of bounds two plays earlier, either.
Jets’ Skrine cleared; Claiborne, Wilkerson questionable
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets cornerback Buster Skrine has cleared the NFL's concussion protocol and will be available to play against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night.
Skrine sat out last Sunday against Atlanta after being injured at Miami the previous week.
Jets acquire CB Rashard Robinson from 49ers for draft pick
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have acquired cornerback Rashard Robinson from the San Francisco 49ers for a pick in next year's draft.
A person with direct knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press that New York traded a fifth-rounder to San Francisco on Tuesday.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because neither team announced specifics of the pick involved in the trade.
Jets starters Skrine, Shell out vs. Falcons with injuries
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets starting cornerback Buster Skrine and right tackle Brandon Shell won't play against the Atlanta Falcons because of injuries.
Skrine suffered a concussion last week at Miami and has been in the league's protocol for head injuries. He sat out practice all week, and coach Todd Bowles ruled him out Friday.
Jets CB Buster Skrine has concussion, uncertain vs. Falcons
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets' secondary might be down a starter against the Atlanta Falcons.
Cornerback Buster Skrine has a concussion and his status is uncertain for the game Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
It is the third known concussion in just over two years for Skrine, who was injured last Sunday at Miami but finished the game.
"He came in Monday morning and they diagnosed him then," coach Todd Bowles said Wednesday.
Worst situational start: The Patriots defense failed to get the Jets off the field on four straight third-down attempts as the hosts scored on their first possession.
Worst drop: In what is becoming a weekly problem, wide receiver Brandin Cooks saw a ball bounce directly off his hands on the first Pats drive of the game.
Jets’ unity, confidence a product of GM’s roster makeover
NEW YORK (AP) — In the middle of a busy offseason marked by a drastic roster renovation, Mike Maccagnan insisted that the New York Jets would be competitive.
The general manager repeated that early in training camp, right when doom and gloom was being predicted for the team — with many fans and media wondering if there would be any victories to celebrate this season.
Well, so far, the Jets already have two, and most of Maccagnan's less-than-popular moves have worked.
Jets’ Skrine fined $24K by NFL, Giants’ Engram $12K
NEW YORK (AP) — New York Jets cornerback Buster Skrine has been fined $24,309 by the NFL for a helmet hit last week at Oakland.
Skrine was called for unnecessary roughness for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Raiders running back DeAndre Washington in the Jets' 42-20 loss.
Running back Matt Forte (knee) active for Jets vs. Dolphins
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets running back Matt Forte is active against the Miami Dolphins despite dealing with a torn meniscus in his right knee.
Forte worked out on the field before the game Saturday night and was deemed OK to play. He was a game-time decision after injuring his knee early in New York's 23-17 overtime win at San Francisco last Sunday.
Forte questionable, Skrine out for Jets vs. Dolphins
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets running back Matt Forte is questionable to play and will be a game-time decision against the Miami Dolphins on Saturday night with a knee injury.
Forte tore the meniscus in his right knee early in New York's 23-17 overtime win at San Francisco last Sunday.
Starting cornerback Buster Skrine is out with a concussion. Rookie Juston Burris and Marcus Williams will likely see increased snaps.
Matt Forte (knee) limited, game-time decision for Jets
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets running back Matt Forte practiced on a limited basis and will likely be a game-time decision against the Miami Dolphins on Saturday night.
Forte sat out practice Wednesday with an injured right knee, but was able to participate in some of Thursday's session. That's an encouraging sign for the 31-year-old running back who leads the Jets with 792 yards rushing and seven touchdowns.
OBJ fined for verbal abuse of official on the field
NEW YORK (AP) — Odell Beckham Jr. was fined $12,154 for verbal abuse/excessive profanity toward an official following the Giants' 24-14 loss at Pittsburgh last weekend.
The fine wasn't related to Beckham's postgame comments to reporters when he described an unsettling exchange with one official, complained about several non-calls and suggested referee Terry McAulay's crew shouldn't work any more Giants games.
Mangold, Clady, Wilkerson among 7 Jets to sit out practice
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Center Nick Mangold, left tackle Ryan Clady and defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson are among seven New York Jets players to not participate in practice for a second straight day because of injuries.
Mangold missed last week's win at Cleveland with a sprained ankle, as did rookie linebacker Darron Lee. Coach Todd Bowles says "there's hope, but it's slim hope" that the two could play Sunday at Miami.
Clady is dealing with an ailing shoulder, while Wilkerson has a sore ankle.
Jets’ 1st-rounder Lee has ankle sprain, uncertain vs. Ravens
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets rookie linebacker Darron Lee has a sprained ankle, and the first-round draft pick's availability is uncertain for Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens.
